Fierce Critter Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 If you'd like to NOT be allergic to cats, try Zyrtec. I have severe - S E V E R E - cat allergies. Zyrtec made me pretty much allergy-free for the first few years I was on it. Since my prescription co-pay for it came to about $1.40 per tablet, I was buying mine online from Canada at about .45 cents per tablet basically, and once I moved back to the Detroit area, a trip across the bridge to the Shopper's Drug Mart cost about the same, maybe up to .50 cents a tablet (it's over the counter in Canada, and you can bring back up to a 90 day supply at a time). I developed a resistence to it finally, however, and recently switched to Singulair. Once again, I'm free of the sinus/nasal problems related to cat allergies. However, since Singular doesn't act on histamines, I once again get itchy eyes from them, and a scratch on my arm will get slightly swollen and itch. My doctor okayed taking benadryl at night to help with this, and I've been picking mine up from the dollar store at $1.00 for a 24-tablet package. Since benadryl makes one horribly sleepy, however, I'm going to switch to Loratadine - basically generic Claritin, an antihistamine. That's available at Aldi's for $2.00 for a 30-count package. For the itchy eyes I use a store-brand eyedrop with antihistamine in it. If Zyrtec works for you, however, it really is miraculous. Had between 4 and 14 cats with it for years before my body finally found a way to work around it. I have about two boxes of 30 each left from Canada that I won't be needing now. I can sell them to you for $15.00 each if you'd like to give it a shot. It'll take a couple weeks for it to kick in.
pharoh Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 done.... thanks all <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The China Wok thanks you
Rayne Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 If you'd like to NOT be allergic to cats, try Zyrtec. I have severe - S E V E R E - cat allergies. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have had a cat before, my doctor placed me on Zyrtec. Your right, it works extremely well ... but I have no insurance and can't afford the perscription every month right now with no job.
Fierce Critter Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 You don't need a prescription to get it from Canada. It's over the counter there, so you can order it by mail or bring it back across the bridge. Most prescription plans either don't cover it or charge their highest co-pay for it anyway. When Claritin went over the counter, most 'scrip plans sent out letters saying, "go get Claritin so you won't cost us so much money" basically - even though Claritin (loritidine) never worked worth a damn for me. My co-pay for Zyrtec went from $10 a month to $50 on one plan, $40 on another. That's when I went with Canadian. I checked with the border patrol at the bridge before I went to get my first batch. They said so long as you don't bring more than a 90-day supply, it's fine. I even declare it when I come back, and they've never even bothered to look at it. If you want to check it out online, the website I used to order from was getcanadiandrugs.com - they have the best price. In Canada, the name brand is Reactine, and the generic version is Cetirizine (cetirizine hydrochloride 10mg is the active ingredient in all three forms). I was buying the generic form. (The way to save the most $$ is to order larger quantities at a time. That way, the shipping charge is spread out across more tablets. And they offer several different shipping options at different prices, too) If you go across the bridge, there's a Shopper's Drug Mart less than a couple miles from the bridge exit. When they run a sale, it'll cost you a total of about $50 American for 90 days worth (that includes bridge fee, but not gas). They will give you the current exchange rate at the register. Just sayin'. I know how miserable I was before the Zyrtec - Seldane worked the best for me, then they took it off the market. Allegra didn't work for me (also over-the-counter in Canada, by the way), and when we tried Zyrtec and it kicked in, I was floored. I'm bumming that it's not working for me right now, but perhaps being away from it for a couple years or so might enable it to work again for me. Since I can't use what I've got, if you'd like both boxes for $20 total, they're yours. The one box is unopened, and the other is missing maybe one tablet.
