Aspartame

Has anyone else got violently ill from this stuff? I have read a lot about this sweetener but some people don't seem to be affected negatively at all. You get some people saying it's deadly, others saying it's with no health risks. I read a article on a anti-aspartame site about a lady supposedly having a lawsuit with Coca-Cola for Diet- Coke making her lose her sight.Opinions, thoughts? Personally, I get really sick from a few sips.. so I can't drink it.

I've tried all the different types of artificial sweeteners and so far they all either make me nauseated and/or trigger a full-blown migraine.

I can taste them too, when they are in anything. Every single one has a foul aftertaste to me.

I've learned to ignor the after taste. Now sugar pop tastes so syrupy and like a thick liquid.

BUT....I need to stop drinking that crap anyways.

I should be drinking juices and more water.

When NutraSweet first came on the market in the early 80's, I was elated. A pop-a-holic, I was so excited to have something that tasted decently good, yet cut down on my caloric intake.

Then the headaches started. And I didn't know why.

Then the complaints about NutraSweet started coming out. So I stopped drinking it. And the headaches stopped.

I strongly suggest you read this - the Wikipedia entry about aspartame. Of particular interest is the part about negative effects from it. Of particular impact is the statement, "The FDA receives more complaints related to aspartame than any other food additive".

In general, my family tries to stick to natural foods. We all use sugar. I don't know about the rest of my family, but I personally just try to limit my intake, including pop. Moderation, you know? Thusfar, everybody in my family is in excellent health, even those of us who are overweight. Our blood testing tends to come back with normal or excellent levels of everything from cholesterol, lipids (blood fat basically), etc. Nobody is diabetic, with the exception of my 80-year-old mother, who basically has type 2 and, to be honest, has always been the least wise with her sweets intake.

But to be as healthy as she really is at 80 on a lifelong diet of fatty Polish staples like kielbasa, fried cheese pierogies, even bread fried in bacon fat, kinda tells you something about moderation & "real" foods. We all just try to stick with as much homecooked, unprocessed foods as possible, and we're all doing ridiculously well.

You know, this raises an interesting point....

My husband suffered from severe migrains for YEARS.....even before I knew him.

Then I observed. He was drinking like 2 2-litres of Sugar Pop a day!!!! WTF! Yeah. That's like a million tmies the sugar intake for a days serving....!

So I said to him, what if the migrains are sugar related? So he started drinking Diet soda. The Migrains stopped. Completely. He suffered daily for years and it just stopped!

He hasn't had a migrain since and this was about 2 years ago.

As far as the aspartame and all that goes relating to headaches...I don't know. I drink diet soda all the time and never get headaches.

I do know that if I DON'T get caffein, I do.

at least my migranes are naturally occouring, but they last days.

It really all depends on what you are sensitive to. Before I started taking Inderal I could not drink orange juice either, even freshly made, without getting an instant headache.

Maybe I'm allergic to the stuff. I don't like the taste either so it's no problem for me to avoid the artificial sweetners.

Oh my, I hated those blasted Migraines. You can really suffer with those bad bitches. My worst one was about 8 days long.. I went to the Emergency, I was going insane from pain. I was silly to wait that long, got Morphine, then I was better. I think the medications I was on , were triggering them. I haven't suffered from migraine in years, thank goodness. I empathize. =(

thier nothing. sister suffers from a differant sort of migrane altogether

though painless, one of her vessels in the cerabellum expands or contracts for a period of time causing stroke like symptoms.

was very worrying when it first happned. and it took a week for hwer to talk properly afterwards.

it was exactly like what happned with my mother during a brain stewm stroke but a few seconds slower and more impact...

found out that was actually triggered by hormones.

but aspartamene still evil *hiss* though least it doesnt fur up your teeth like sugary drinks do. i dont think i could go on a milsim event without my pilots flask filled of ribena. water gets dull after 3 days straight and someone in your section pulls out a 2 litre bottle of orangeade, openns the nid with a loud hiss, gulps some down, wipes the condensation on thier brow and packs it away back iun thier bergans.

bastard didnt even offer it. (we got him later with a flashbang rolled under the toilet cubicle door)

Alot of diet foods have something on the label that says Phenylkatoneriks or something, sounds like some kind of warning.
