Brenda Starrr Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 This past Friday, I gave notice that I'm stepping down from retail management Hell. You sort-of have to do something about it when you begin to suffer anxiety attacks, which aggravate the ulcer. I was having these issues. I don't need to feel sick. I need to be healthy so that I can do cool things with my kids. Now, I can. Yeah, it's a bit of a pay cut. So what? I'll be there one to two days a week from 9-2, doing what I love: makeup. I never had the time when I was managing. Now, I will. Even cooler is the new weekend gig that I'm taking on. I'm back to doing nails and makeup in an incredible wellness spa and salon in Baltimore. Friday through Sunday, the business is sick. They're turning people away because there's only so much room on the books! Yesterday, I was there for their two-year anniversary party. I had a blast. Wayne loved the place as well. I can wear color! I can show my ink! Freedom of self expression!!!!
pharoh Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 Rock on babe, you deserve it, now send some of that luck over here lol
Brenda Starrr Posted April 16, 2006 Author Posted April 16, 2006 Me too, Brian. Technically, I can't afford the pay cut. However, I look at it like this: If I stay in my present job, dealing with what I deal with, it'll make me sick. If I get sick and can't work, I make NO money. But if I do this, I'll be doing what I love while making money, instead of feeling sick. It makes a whole lot more sense to me.
The Rod Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 I think you're making the right decision... *hands you a "congrats on the new job" bouquet of black and red roses*
Msterbeau Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Good luck Bren!! Hopefully Wayne will have a job soon, too... :whistling
Brenda Starrr Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 Thank you, Marc. I have a really good gut feeling about Wayne's interview tomorrow.
Onyx Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I did the same thing 4 years ago. In most companies middle management is the worst job in the world ~ all of the responsibility and none of the real decision-making power. I hated every single day. My employees liked me and even upper management wanted me to stay, but there were way too many problems that could never be resolved and I felt like I was banging my head against a wall every day. The bit of extra cash was in no way worth my sanity.

Brenda...will you be making x-tra tips/commissions to make up for the paycut?
Brenda Starrr Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 Thats probably one of the smartest things I've heard in regards to the balance of Money vs. sanity. Brenda...will you be making x-tra tips/commissions to make up for the paycut? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Absolutely. This is a high-dollar, high-traffic salon and wellness spa. Federal Hill is a high-rent area in Baltimore City. They've been turning away a massive amount of clientele. That changes as of 5/5, when I come on board. I should be able to make up for the pay cut because of this.
kellygrrrrrl Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Sweet! Sounds like a great job! Best of luck! :clover =)
Brenda Starrr Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 Thank, Kelly. I'm really excited about it. What's hysterical is the fact that my current manager went to the Prescriptives counter where my friend, Owen, works. She asked him if he was interested. I can't wait to see what happens there!
kellygrrrrrl Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 In desperate moments comes desperate measures! HA! She's losing a good one! Good ones are hard to find!
Brenda Starrr Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 If Owen takes over my position, all Hell will break loose. The customers thought that I was blunt? They ain't seen nothing yet!! There is nothing funnier than a gay man in a management postion in a cosmetics store.
kellygrrrrrl Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 *rubs hands in sinsister manner.......* :devil heh heh heh heh :devil Ahh yes..... now TAHT is funny :laughing I love gay guy salonists.... (I know I know..."salonist" is not a word...)
