The_Dark Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 1. Place your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and Reboot your PC 2. Push a key to boot from the CD-rom 3. When you reach the Welcome to Setup screen choose the Repair option by pressing R 4. This will start the Recovery console and the list of Windows installations will appear 5. As you only have one installation on your PC you need to press the number which is relevant to your installations location. This, obviously will typically be 1 6. Type in your Administrator password. If you are using Windows XP Home edition the administrator password is blank by default so simply press Enter 7. Now type bootcfg /list 8. A list will now appear of all the entries in your boot.ini file 9. Next type bootcfg /rebuild 10. Your boot.ini file should now be repaired 11. Finally remove your XP CD from the CD-ROM and then type Exit 12. Reboot
Scary Guy Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 You assume I have a CD to go off of, that's not the case. He has Home, I have Professional, the repair option doesn't work like that. I ended up fixing it but would still like the file just to have incase this problem crops up again.

The error will say hal32.dll but what you really need is hal.dll it's that part of windows that keeps software from directly accessing hardware. Hardware Abstraction Layer. You know.. many times the fix for this problem is to boot to any XP cd version, go to the repair console and run chkdsk /r

His was the type that wants to format the drive and start from scratch. I was kind of hoping to avoid that but ended up trying that anyhow. Now that that has been done I still can't get the drivers because they seem to be nowhere on the hard drive or CD. I can't even download them because the e-machines website has no links to anything resembling drivers (just a PDF manual and spec sheet on the PC). I'll keep that hal32.dll = hal.dll thing in mind though. You'd think that if it asked for a file it would want that file. I hate windows.

E-Machine uses Notorn Ghost to restore a factory image, with all drivers installed. You wont find any drivers on it unless you have something that can look "inside" an image file. You can get drivers for everythign in an emachine though as all the parts are name brand. You can go to the variuos parts manufactureres websites and download them.

It didn't use norton it used something called angel... something, I forgot the name not that it matters. As far as the name brand drivers go that's a lot of work. Going to each website looking for compatable drivers for that verison of the product. I've decided to give it back to him and tell him to take it to best buy and make them fix it. Still under warrenty = less headache for me. Let them fuck with it, I'm done.
