It'd make me wonder what UFOs have to do with burning mines and creepy monsters walking around.....

Not a damned thing.

In one of the possible endings to the game, UFO's land and take the protagonist away.

It's very silly, makes no sense, and was probably thrown in as a joke by the authors of the game.

On a side note, here are a few ways the game varies widely from the movie:

The main protagonist in the game is Harry, Cheryl's father. Yes, they changed the names for the movie. Cheryl's mother never appears except in the beginning credits.

Cheryl is adopted, having been found by the side of the road basically by Harry and his wife. My memory is sketchy, but I think Harry's wife is dead.

Harry & Cheryl do end up in Silent Hill together. The way Rose in the movie wanders through the town, following maps & notes left by Cheryl are very similar to gameplay. He battles a LOT more creatures than Rose does in the film. Flashlights to attract creatures. But the static noise from a radio (in the film, a cellphone) is your tip-off that a creature is near. That's a device I wish had been used more in the film.

Cybil Bennett, the cop, does play a large role in the game. Depending on which ending you end up with, she either dies after becoming one of the creatures, or lives and ends up going back home with Harry & the now baby Cheryl to be wife & mother.

Dahlia turns out to be evil in the game. She plays a major role in the finale.

There is an evil entity named Samael who is a boss at the end. My memory is sketchy, but he's Alessa's demon father or something like that.

I didn't play any of the sequel games, so I don't know what might have been gleaned off them. I do not, however, remember pyramid head at all. Either my memory is that bad, or he did not appear at all in the first game.
