So the title of this thread is what I want to say to my mom's stupid computer.

How do you people live with using PC's and Windows?

Why did I have to drop my powerbook?

Time to get a Mac Mini.

But seriously, windows sucks. Apple OSX rules. How can any of you look yourselves in the mirror knowing you own a completely terrible operating system?

Posted

Mainly because it's a more widely accepted OS than others, whether it works better or not?

thier cheaper.

I use Windows and have no problems... then again, I know what I am doing. I can't say that for 99% of the people that use Windows though. I've used MacOSx and damn near every other version of MacOS.. I'll stick with Windows. I find MacOS to be more... well.. stupid.

I'm using winxp pro and have very few to no problems, but then again I built my own machine as opposed to using a proprietary corroded piece of crap.

I started out on Macs back in 1986 and was "switched" to Windows in 1990.

I prefer Windows. The biggest complaint/boast I hear from Mac users vs. Windows users is that the MAC OS is "so much easier to use".

Um, I don't see it. I don't, and never have, had a problem understanding and finding my way around Windows.

My comp was free and my roommate hooked me up with WinXP pro. I love it so far...hated ME

My job is Windows programming. That's my excuse. :) My preference for Windows started with my interest in gaming. If you want the A titles when they come out and many, good B+ titles, you need a Windows box. My interest in computer gaming has waned, though. I wouldn't say completely terrible, though attempting to share files makes me want to throw things.

Yes, Windows does suck. The great thing... Windows swallows and is still there when you wake up in the morning.

Completely terrible operating system depends on the user. A lot of people get frustrated when they are ignorant to the OS they are using. Yes, Microsoft added a lot of BS in XP but if you know how to disable the shit they thought was a good idea then you have a very stable, very compatable, very flexible OS. Mac's OS is nice but not as widely accepted by software developers, thus less superior to Windows.

I personally have a sort of hatred for XP, though.. Because Microsoft added all that extra BS and "user friendly" features, I usually have to fix 2 computers a week around here.

My roommates, once they found out my experience with computers, decided to refer all of their friends to me who have problems.. Now I'm the fucking Laramie IT and I don't get paid for it. Seriously. I've been here for 4 months now and have reformatted and fixed 17 (some more than once) computers.. I like to reformat my own once every other month but I've been too busy fixing others' pieces of shit because either A) XP's stupid ass "user fuck-over" features that tend to fuck things up more than help, or B) Dumbasses that think they know what they're doing and FUBAR their computers, or C) Ignorant people who really don't know what they're doing and have no clue on how to maintain a healthy PC..

But, other than all that, XP really is a good OS once you strip out the unnecessary or unwanted services. I've gotten so good at it that I can now reformat and tweak a PC in about an hour and 10 minutes, depending on how fast it installs XP.

And nothing beats Linux as far as a good OS.. Only problem with Linux is you can't find software that works with it. Oh and it's free.

Linux is a great OS as long as you dont take the following into consideration:

1. Ease of Use

2. Software Titles

3. Support

No offense, but if you have to format and reinstall every 2 months.. your doing something wrong.

I'm a power user of my PC.. I do everything from making music, mixing it, etc. to *excessive* gaming. Over a period of time XP will start using up more and more memory the more you do, and since I like to get the most out of my PC, usually after a couple of months of surfing the internet, installing and uninstalling games and other programs, the harddrives get snuffed up with garbage, the registry looks like a bible, memory usage goes up, and things just get cluttered.

I've found that it's actually easier to just reformat my OS harddrive (yes I keep Windows and Windows-based programs on their own hard drive); instead of spending a couple of hours just cleaning the registry, and then an extra 30 minutes digging through BS that got stuffed in various places due to internet spyware, etc.

And no I don't have to do this, I just like a good clean up periodically..

Posted

No offense, but I simply could not imagine reformatting my machine every other month. Hell, I get upset if I have to do it once a year.

Posted

I have to agree. I hate reformatting even though my roommate does it for me!

Posted

If you keep proper backups it isn't a problem. I haven't had a problem with XP though (save minor glitches) and the only time I reformat now isn't a reformat, it's a format for a new hard drive install :D

As far as OSX vs. XP (or Mac vs. Win in general) it depends on what you're used to. They both do the same thing.

XP is made for idiots who can't afford the high cost of a mac who know nothing about spyware or viruses and get them all the time, and to keep tech support guys like me in business. It has the most application support but thats also why it has more viruses and spyware.

OSX is made for idiots who are stupid enough to pay the high price for one because they have a monopoly on the hardware you can use it on. Who want things to "just work" and don't like to tinker under the hood (XP=hotrod OSX=rolls royce). Based on the BSD UNIX core it can run all the apps that BSD and Linux can, however it gets those problems as well.

So as with all things it's give and take. You can not say one is better than the other. They each just have their advantages and disadvantages.

Not that I want to but I can crash any OS given enough time, no matter how stable it is stupposed to be. I just thought I'd point that out, and it really takes some skill (or stupidity) to make DOS crash (DOS on an 80486 was like a tank and would run forever or at least until the computer inhaled enough dust to short it'self out).

Now if we're comparing companies instead of operating systems (Apple and Microsoft) then yeah Apple is better because I don't agree with Microsoft's business practices.

I don't lose anything.. I keep all of my personal files on one hard drive, my games on another, and my OS on it's own hard drive, so it takes me like an hour to reformat and tweak XP, and reinstall drivers. And maybe 10 minutes or so to set up my custom visual styles and other odds and ends.. I don't mind doing it, and it allows my games to run at optimum performance..

And OSX isn't a bad OS unless you want the good games

#1 I know what I'm doing.

#2 Componants are cheaper.

#3 I don't pay for my os.

#4 I hate propritary hardware.

#5 I use XP with eye candy stiped out, 2K, 98even with the mem leak I can run it for a month without reboot, Linspire, BeOS, and a customised versin of unix made to run frome a cd "Let the task determon the OS" I always say

#666 any one of thoes OS's by them selves are mor versitile than mac's OSX AKA Fluffy eye candy

Posted

Obscurity does not equal Superiority. If MaxOS was to suddenly become the #1 desktop OS.. the viruses and spyware would be written to attack it.

Posted

Yes the only reason Macs don't get viruses and spyware is because nobody wastes their time writing viruses or spyware to attack OSX, there's not enough of 'em out there to raise interest.

And you're right, IE is a joke.. That's why I use Mozilla.
