I could come and look sometime if you want.  Or bring it by.  What kinda car/truck?  Can you get the latch at a junkyard?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I might welcome that. I'll follow-up with you when finances allow for the part purchases.

It's a 99 Chevy S-10. These things are notorious for having a great, unstoppable engine, but everything else falls apart around it.

The latch I know I can find online for around $60. A junkyard might not be willing to take it out of a door. They'd probably charge me that much anyway. Just the inside vinyl door armrest/handle cost me $25. They charge for the amount of time it takes to remove the item.

The cost of the fuel pump I might be able to reduce somewhat. I have a local mechanic who will do it strictly for cost of parts and probably only 1-2 hours labor. The part runs around $600 through a dealership, he can get it for around $350 and wouldn't charge me extra. If I can get the part online - which I can for about $160 - he might just charge me the $50-$100 for the labor. So that will probably be doable before the damn thing quits pumping altogether. I need to check with him.

He won't do the door latch, however. Doesn't like messing with the inside of doors. I'd do it myself, but I'm really not mechanically inclined.

Some junk yards let you take things out yourself.. :-)

Lemme know on the other stuff..

Making it a lot like my '89 Omni, sounds like.

Yes actually, some jolt of lightning (we presume) sent my main display computer to go spiraling into badness. They ordered me a new one *eye roll* brand new car. Other than that ... no complaints.

And anyone looking for parts, give me a call, I work for an auto parts store and can get new parts cheap. As for working on the cars, I am working too much to take on any side jobs right now, but could possibly give Marc a hand on some if need be.

How about remembering that you can walk and drive and DBK can't?  :wink

Very true but the silver lining was about owning a car. I was just pointing out that repair costs, especially when major aren't a silver lining to owning a car. Which is what the reference was about. Especially since my car isn't working and repairing it would be in the thousands of dollars. Also at that time I did not know that about DBK.

did you car get struck again rayne?

i think its gods way of telling you to buy a ford KA or a chrystler PT cruiser

Not always true.  Look at it this way.  yes I own a car.  no I have not been able to drive it for 2 1/2 years.  It needs an engine or engine rebuild, 1 brakeline replaced, the rest have to be inspected and possibly replaced.  Needs 4 tires.  Needs new brakes plus rotors and drums turned.  Needs a battery.  From sitting where it is, snow was piled up by it so body is now rusting badly.  Plus hornets have decided it's a great place to make a home.  Sorry but I can't see a silver lining there.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I must concur. It's extremely hard to find any silver lining to a non-functional vehicle that you can't afford to get fixed. I once had a helly sweet 69 Cutlass... drove she for about 2 months, then spent the next 3 years moving it from one relative or friend's yard to another. Somewhere in there I had to pay a couple bills to get it out of the Hamtramck impound lot. Hubby finally started to put a new block in it, then hit a snag & it spent a year in a friend's shop. I finally wised up & sold it while I could still get something for it. Draco is right, it was not in any way an asset.

So far White Girl, my '01 Explorer, has stayed in good fettle... despite recently being sabotaged by the wretched pigfucking knaves at Valvoline who disconnected a vacuum hose (or something, but that's what Estranged Hubby Rick thinks) in an attempt to coerce me into spending $90 on a "fuel system cleaning". Truly bogue shit- I will NEVER in this life go to another Valvoline place, & I will advise errone who'll listen not to either.

hmmm.

i had an 86 corolla with a faulty auto choke. pulling the vacuum of the carb actually helped start it on cold days, and when the engine warmed up it was prone to tearing the exaust pipe just after the exhaust manifold on torque reaction if you weren't gentle on the gas pedal.

it was nicknamed the beast in collage for this reason. my other car at the time was a 1980 datsun that pulled to the left continuously though otherwise in mint condition (and 50-mpg from a petrol engine not to be sniffed at). hmm i have hankering to put two cars on road again but i'm not sure the expense on insuring a caterham/westfield or morgan 4-4 would be, i have the sneaky feeling tax and insurance would be crippling

This is damage from the strike. They took one look at it and was like "WTF did you do to this thing?" Then I had to explain, they pretty much agreed with the lightning theory.

Oh and yes ... I agree, I'm gonna go buy a KA or a PT Cruiser right away. NOT.

yeah....cars suck sometimes. depending on what kind of car you have and how well you keep up on it. however, no matter how well you take care of it, it may always decide to take a dump on you just because it decides to. i personally think that my car may be possessed. the check engine light goes on and off when it wants to even though there is not a damn thing wrong with it. my oil light is going on and off. i need to check that. howver, i feel really stupid because it is really hard to open the hood of my car so when i am at a gas station trying to check the oil i always have to wait for someone that can open the hood for me. the rest i can do myself. makes me feel really really stupid, but oh well what else can i do. then as i was pulling into a gas station tonight i hit the curb and bent the rim on my front drivers side wheel, i hope that it doesnt cause my tire to go flat, that is just not something that i care to have to deal with right now. but the way my week has been going i wouldnt be surprised if that happened. my car is usually pretty good to me, but believe me i have had my fair share of car troubles. i used to have an oldsmobile and it decided to blow the transmission in the middle of 23 and gratiot. of course it had to be rush hour and people didnt like that very much. it started smoking and then the smoke started pouring into the car. not a good thing. i ended up selling it to a junkyard for 50 bucks. ouch!!! that really sucked big time. anyway, i thank my lucky stars that my car is running well right now. i should stop talking about it or something will go wrong with it. knock on wood. lmao. anyway, has anyone had problems like mine before?

over here scrapies tend to charge you £50 for taking it away.

which works as an advantage sometimes as the dealerships sometimes fill thier yards with part exes no one wants. local peugeot dealership most of my cousins and my dad works at usually sells them to staff at £50. only one or two people atr the dealers who dont drive pugs, and thats nibs and his stupidly powerful subaru, and francis with his upgraded R14 nissan

I'm feeling really glad at this point that all I need is an oil change and my 50,000 mile checkup, and my gf needs brakes and an oil change. I'm willing to suffer a passenger side door that only opens from the inside to save couple thousand.
