Cool live venues in Detroit?

Hello all! I'm new to this board and from NY but visiting Detroit in August, and possibly playing with my band there on the weekend of the 26-27th.

Where do you go to see bands perform? From your posts it seems like City Club is the coolest game in town, but they don't mention anything about bands on their page. Is it mainly a DJ venue where people go to dance?

Any great local acts you'd recommend for me to contact and perform with?

That would be because they usually do bands downstairs in the Labrynth. I'm sure at some point some of our local band members on the board will chime in.

Most people go to Alvins or The Magic Stick for alternative/industrial acts. Maybe The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.

I myself just started working for I-Rock which is starting to cater more to those acts on Thursdays. If you want e-mail irocknightclub@hotmail.com and talk to their booking guy about it directly.

Yeah, Alvins, or Magic Stick would be ideal...

Try the Shelter as well?

AH! I see, I didn't realize it had levels. Sounds similar to a club night here in NY called Byte. Sorry for the delay in response, I *thought* I had this set to email replies to me, but ah well, I always fumble with commands on a new messageboard. Thanks so much for the info, everyone here has been so helpful! You guys (And gals) rock!

I found the site for Magic Stick, but not for Alvins, I shall begin the googling anew! Thanks for the heads up on that and the Blind Pig :) I was checking out I-Rock due to another post here on the board. It sounds really cool, but I'll only be able to have my band there for the weekend, Thursday is a little too early in the week. I really appreciate that you gave me the contact info for the booking though, you are awesome!

There's one I haven't heard of yet! Thanks very much, I shall add this to my list of places to check out. You and everyone else on this board rocks! I never imagined I'd get so many great responses.

That's definitely good to know! I think there's some big punk show going on, or maybe that's at magic stick? I've been looking at so many club websites and calendars that they're all turning into one big blur. Thanks for your help!
