Mysterious Tooth-Rotting Ray?

So I took my kitties to the vet for shots today... and discovered that one of the wretched beasties has a decayed tooth that will cost $300+ to extract. Why is this so strange, you may ask? Well I myself am currently in need of about $15k in dental work... in the past 6 weeks I've endured 2 root canals, an extraction, 2 abcessed teeth, and infected gums. What the hell? Was there some kind of bizarre anti-fluoride in the water at my old place? Is there such a thing as tooth-rot clusters, like they have cancer clusters in places like downriver? Or is this just an odd coincidence? All I know for sure is... having bad teeth sucks big donkey dicks.

yeah... at this point I might as well not have any since my extremely crappy dental coverage maxed out for the year at $1k.

That's kind of what I'm doing... having my many missing ones replaced w/implants, which are made of titanium. More expensive than the bridgework/denture route but much less hassle in the long run. Hehe maybe I can talk them into using stainless instead of porcelain/resin for the crowns!

My vet said it's all the canned cat food. Well, processed cat food in general. And that if they were living in the wild, they would eat raw meat which has very little natural sugar and the bones scrape their teeth clean.

The trade off being obviously that they get worms and fleas and maybe attacked and eated so........

Myself personally, I have pretty good teeth. Oh and I just found a doc who has gas even though you have to pay extra for it.

I WANT THE GAS!!!

I feel for ya though. My man just had a root canal and it really sucked. He was not a happy camper when he got home.

Well, since we're talking about teeth, and I don't think this really warrants a new thread, I'm getting all four of my wisdom teeth yanked in a couple of weeks. I'm a little nervous!

So yeah, pg, I hear ya...dental work = the suckage.

you'll be fine lulu.

best thing i had nwas my wisdoms yanked... and the set i had behind those.

a mysterious thing happned in work tbh. just before the detroit visit my group of friends all got broken teeth or teeth that fell apart just before my visit. i'm actually still missing 1/2 of my lower left 6, but it hasnt pained me in 4 months so i think i'll just point it out next exam rather than cope with making additional appointments. the joys of dental insurance...

my sister has been known to undergo a root canal without anastetic as she's needle phobic (genuine full blown panic attacks if she sees a medical needle, and very uncomfortable and aprehensive around any ordinary ones and squeemish when people are having injections). and i have a resistance to the plain vanilla anastetics dentista can use. i miss having a dental surgeon who was authorised to use the other sorts of anastetic

plus in the wild the meow-meows prolly wouldn't live long enough for their teeth to decay. I think barn cats average 3 years or something like that.

& ya, my old dentist would whip out the tank the instant I walked in the office. Wish he hadn't retired. My general dentist is generous with the gas, but my endo dude doesn't use it... he uses a dam for all procedures & sez the combination of dam & gas mask is too stressful for most patients. I can see how it'd be a bit claustrophobic, but seems like once the gas kicked in you really wouldn't care. But what do I know. The good news is he works REALLY fast... this guy does the least traumatic root canals I've ever had.

Lulu, you'll be OK... I've had a LOT of dental work in my life & trust me, extractions- even the surgical ones- are pretty easy to deal with. Plus they give you really good drugs. I'd rather have 4 extracts than one root canal any day. Just be sure to follow ALL the instructions they give you afterward or you can end up with a dry socket, which by all accounts is truly horrific.

Thanks for the encouragement :) I already signed the papers saying I want to be zonked out during the procedure, so I suppose that will help. But then that in itself kinda has me worried, too. Aherehrgh.

That is the way to go, I got knocked out with the first one .. and the general made me wake up in a sort of panic.... I felt like I couldnt breathe .. and I started to freak out.

So the next one I went with "local". I'll take the 10 min panic of the general over being able to hear them rip my tooth out anyday ..

You'll do just fine Mander. Don't worry, just think of how much better you will feel when they are out =)
