BrassFusion Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 it's like rockabilly but it's darker and scarier. generally pretty sweet, imo.
MarsDustDoug Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 ah one of those moments where I get to shine! *cracks knuckles* Where to beging. The term psychobilly was first used by Mr Johnny Cash in a song where he calls his pieced togetehr car a "psychobilly cadillac". The style of music is credited to The Meteors (who will be in town august 20th, there is a thread here in the nightlife section, hence why those of us who posted in there are pretty damn excited to see the creators). This occured in about 1981. The scene thrived in the undergrounds of europe for years but never brimming to the top as much as it is now. The idea of psychobilly is punk rock mxed with rockabilly to put it simpley. The lyrics tend to be about horror/sci0fi things IE: zombies (though sometimes surfing zombies), stabbing, murder, chainsaw massacres, aliens, torture, etc. The other hand of it though gettign its roots from punk, the scene never wanted, and still does not want, the political aspect of punk rock. You will pretty much never hear a psychobilly band complaining about the state of the government. it sounds like...The Misfits Vs The Stray Cats stuff to listen to? well start with our hometown psychos first: The Koffin Kats www.myspace.com/koffinkats from there you cant go wrong with- The Nekromantix www.myspace.com/nekromantix Mad Sin www.myspace.com/MadSin The Rocketz www.myspace.com/therocketz Mad Marge and the Stonecutters www.myspace.com/thestonecutters that should get you started pretty well. Im sure Joey Deadcat will be right alogn to add more as well

Moonlight_Phantasy Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I must listen to this myself........hmmm............
Joey Deadcat Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Pretty much what Doug mentioned above. Mardust Magazine's got a good article on the psychobilly scene. Also, if you're interested in the scene, you might wanna check out the old-school (mostly)British stuff that kicked things off:The Meteors(the granddaddy's of psycho),The Krewmen, Guana Batz, Frantic Flintstones, Batmobile, The Sharks, Frenzy, The Stingrays,Restless,Spellbound, and The Deltas. Then you got Demented Are Go,Klingonz, The Quakes (who'll be coming to Detroit 8/25), Torment, Polecats, King Kurt, Bang Bang Bazooka,The Phantom Rockers, and Coffin Nails. They've been around since the 80s(and most of 'em are still going strong!). Current: 7 Shot Screamers (great punky/glam-type band - almost like a rockabilly Johnny Thunders) Calavera The Slanderin Os Catalepticos(brutal psycho ftom Brazil;gonna be playing their last gig in Cali in September) Rezurex(one of my big faves right now) The Peacocks Thee Merry Widows The Formaldehydes Calamitiez(from Spain) Gorilla(from Hungary; another one of my all-time faves) Evil Devil from Italy Banane Metalik(France) Chibuku(Germany) Asmodeus(Netherlands) Mad Heads (Ukraine; love their early stuff) Phenomenauts The Deadcats The Gutter Demons The Ripmen Damage Done By Worms Lonesome Kings Photon Torpedoes Barnyard Ballers Scum Rats Demented Scumcats(band featuring members of Demented Are Go and Scum Rats) Dead Kings The Deadutantes Concombre Zombi Hellbillys James Demon Bad Reputation Big John Bates Chop Tops Lords Of The Highway Flametrick Subs Dragstrip Riot Dragstrip 77 Hayride To Hell From Japan: the late Mad Mongols,STH,Cracks, and The Battle Of Ninjamanz From Chicago:Three Blue Teardrops, The Massacres, Rigor Phallus, and Curtains There's a very young up & coming psycho band right here in Detroit called The Hex - sounding very good! And there was the late, great 8 Ball Grifter from Lansing And then there were the 3 Gothabilly comps put out by Skully Records. Lotta great bands if you wanna check 'em out!
Head Wreck Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 lets not forget the demented are go. currently one of my most played aside from the cramps and nekros. the horror pops are a great band to dabble with. they draw more on the punk side, neckroman (guitarist for the horror pops and bassist/lead vocals for the nekromantix) himself says the horror pops are a more of "whatever" band. nekromantix are an obvious start from there. the meteors are well worth a listen to as well as the cramps, infact theres a dispute between the two camps on who invented the psychobilly sound first.
Homicidalheathen Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Punk rock meets country. Lots of base as in the big base guitars they use in Orchestras and people slamming into each other with mohawks whilst listening to it.
Scary Guy Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I can't believe no one mentioned surf rock yet. Although it does stem from rockabilly a lot of psychobiliy groups capitolize on that. A friend of mine (awesome DJ btw) even calls it "Monster Surf" pretty much because she doesn't know the correct term, but I think hers fits just fine.
Head Wreck Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 surfabilly. fabulous monsters were good, i dont know if thier still going though.
Joey Deadcat Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Dark surf-sounding stuff? Ghastly Ones are fun but you can't go wrong with The Scariest Band In The World: Deadbolt! Then there's Cult Of The Psychic Fetus who blend dark surf and rockabilly into their own brand of spook rock.
