Der Nister Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 This should help boost Michigans lagging economy. I hope. ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 10 — Google plans to build an office and research center here that will have up to 1,000 employees, people who had been briefed on the plan said Monday night. The announcement is set to be made Tuesday morning by Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm at a news conference at the state Capitol in Lansing. Google is expected to open the center in downtown Ann Arbor, the hometown of the University of Michigan, where Larry Page, one of Google’s founders, earned his undergraduate degree in engineering. Dubh Aingeal Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 The majority of the jobs are for sales reps for their adwords program. Pay is 47k a year. From what I have seen discussed and heard on some other lists I belong to a good portion of those positions will be transfers from some of their other sites as they try to condense down the adwords locations into one place. The IT positions were done months ago for 6 month contracts to come in and set up their server room to be managed from a off site location.
Onyx Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 47 K a year is nothing to sneeze at. I can't help but think it's a good thing even if they transfer in most from elsewhere. More people moving here with good paying jobs = a nice little boost to the economy because they will be spending a lot of the cash in Michigan.
Der Nister Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 Thank you Onyx - that was part of my point. The other part being that since we've lost a lot of factories that this will (we hope) bring to life other jobs because of said additional money being spent in this area.
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 She's done a great job with bringing in jobs and...even though I really can't stand her, jobs are important to me. i've heard we have towns with a third of the population on unemployment and another big chunk on wellfare here. She sees the writing on the wall I think, our economy here is too dependent on the automotive industry which with each new month seems to be more and more of a disapointment. It would be nice if Kwame would take notice. He has more hotels going up and for what? Superbowl's over chief.
Der Nister Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 Well it'll be difficult for DeVos supporters to say Granholm isn't doing anything for Michigan's economy. This is proof she is and more people need to start relizing that the days of getting a good paying job in the auto industry are long gone and have been for 15 years or more. Michigan needs to go high tech.
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 We deffinately need something new. I was looking through the jobs section of the paper the other day and I mean these places want start you out at 15-20 grand a year nowadays with a 4-year degree. In other words, minimum wage. You can't even get a job at a book store with less than a 4-year degree nowadays, because there aren't enough jobs for people like that here, so those are the jobs they take, service sector. So if you have an Associates or less, you're lucky to get a paper-route. Do not lose your job, nowadays, let me tell you. You'll be hating life. And a lot of people are just being laid off.
Der Nister Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 So true PH - Michigan needs a newer industry to save it or we'll all be tsol.
bav Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Most of the space would be used for a technology and call center, with about 40,000 square feet needed to house the library digitization project, which has been hindered by court challenges over copyrights. This is actually the part of the article I'm most interested in. There's a lot of digital archiving projects going on around this part of the Mid-West these days.

Rayne Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I just applied for a job at Google. ... I couldn't resist. I'm highly qualified and it pays a MINIMUM of 4 times what I'm being paid now.
