The way I figure, the price of gas will increase about 17 dollars per gallon before it hits 20 dollars per gallon. =P

Anyway, taking the bus isn't going to help in the long term, because busses use gas too. The cost of gas will increase relative to inflation until people can't afford to use it at all, at which point our administration might FINALLY address the global energy crisis.

Hey but gas here is still alot cheaper than it is in Europe.

Iraqi's are currently paying 5 cents (U.S.D.) per gallon, but it is their oil so they should be paying that amount.

You know what DM, you should move to Qatar. The gas is cheap there and everything is subsidized by the oil industry. I'm thinking of moving there myself.

To say they pay 5 US cents on the gallon is one thing... but what's their average hourly income? 10 cents?

Depends, the Kurdish north is doing very well. Other parts, not so much. Many people are making zero per hour. Haliburton is making alot though. :whistling

I don't think it's so much an issue of fuel prices being too high. We have some of the cheapest gas prices in the world. I do say it's an issue of our wages being too low though.

Other countries that are paying the equivalent of 6-7$/gallon also have minimum wages equal to $10-12/hr.

Is that a fair estimate of the situation?

So their minimum hourly wage is worth about two gallons of gas. That's pretty close to the situation we have here.

Minimum wage is kind of a joke anyway. It's so low it hardly has an effect on adults who work full time. The people I worked at McDonald's with who were making 5.15 an hour were sophomores in high school...

Actually, at $3/gallon...we could not quite buy 1.5 gallons of gas with our 5.15. Where as they can buy 2. So...they are earning a fair percentage more, on average and spending a fair percentage less.

And minimum wage is not just something for kids anymore. w/ a 4-year degree, you'd be alright starting at minimum wage, today. It's not uncommon.

I've actually never had a minimum wage job. It would be nice if there were MORE jobs, however, then I could find one, maybe. And if the pendulum swings back to an employee's market, companies would have to raise their wages to compete with each other.

Not saying they shouldn't increase the fed. minimum wage. I just don't think it's one of the major problems in our economy at the moment.

Do people really get paid minimum wage these days?

My sister just got a job at 7-11 for $8.50 an hour. The sign in the Burger King wndow says now hiring $7 an hour. Who is paying minimum wage?

Some places still do, but mostly to high school kids with no experience who only work after school. And of course waitresses make less than minimum wage.

Probably worth noting that Europe's prices have a large tax component in them. It's probably the only way to discourage consumption.

I just sold my gas guzzling truck.

Tommorow I'm going to the car auction in search of a rubber band powered car.

I'd also say that beyond this being more of an issue of wages being too low that it's also an issue of our consuming too much fuel.

I think the US makes up like 1/22 of the worlds population but uses 1/4 of the worlds oil. My numbers may be off but it's something ridiculous like that.

I think that's right.

I heard that by the end of the summer, gas will up to 4 dollars a gallon. even people with well paying jobs will be hurting just because of the gas prices! the amount of money that someone makes working does have an impact on the economy, how will these things be purchased if no one has the money to buy them? The cost of living is on the rise but no one is getting paid to be able to live comfortable. the economy is for shame!

Many people do make enough money to live comfortably. There are just too few of those people.

False. Kuwaiti's yes. Iraqis and Iranians no. Its a matter of refineries. All that oil and Iran only has 5 operating refineries.

I read on Bloomberg yesterday that oil analysts predict $65/barrel oil down from its current level of $75/barrel due to profit taking.

The article went on to predict eventual $100/barrel prices.

Somewhere in the range of $4-$4.50 a gallon.

were currently a one income family.

I make 50 grand a year. I work long hard pressure filled weeks weeks to do that.

In theory - that's respectable, 50 grand.

In reality - its borderline survival. We do not live frivolously and i cant even remember the last time I bought socks.

Were doing alot of re-evaluating recently, Laura and I.

We own a fairly large home on a very large lot.

Nothing fancy mind you, just a big old (old being key here) house on an old lot. I got a very good deal on it when I bought it. But homes (this is my 2nd) come with issues that cost money. A home in one sense can protect you financially. But it can also cost you.

Last sunday I sold my beloved F150.

It was a nice truck, fully paid for, and in great shape.

But it also sucked gas, I dirve from Garden CIty to Wixom every day, and we had some other overhead to catch up on.

two day ago i bought a tiny little nutless ford aspire at an auction for 350.00 bucks.

its got a cracked windsheild, needs a clutch, and is a very feminine metallic purple color. But it runs good and has cold AC and gets great gas mileage. This was my sacrifice. By the way i'm seriously thinking of painting a skull and crossbones on the hood. Thats my way of making peace with my sacrifice.

Laura, is now looking for part time work.

this too, was very difficult for me to accept, as I had promised her before moving to MI that her working days were behind her. But the reality is that for now - at least for the next year, I need her help. That was a very difficult thing for me to ask for, but the realities are what they are. This is her sacrifice.

We've thought about selling the house and taking a loss, and its not that big of a deal to me, but Laura loves her home and I cant take that from her. We're also talking about a potential roomate situation, as our home is a 4 bedroom and we have no kids. That would be our dual sacrifice I suppose.

Besides the gas issues - the cost of living in general continues to escalate. For all of us. Maybe in time we'll sell this place, and buy a much smaller home, or perhaps become renters again, or buy a trailer and stop therefore worrying about money altogethor while we let society re-classify us as potential failures because we dotn hav ethe SUV and the big house and the rest of it.

its been said that its in times of abundence that the charactor of a man is truly made known. I think theres a lot of truth to that statement.

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
