Blackmail Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Who's with me? In high school I was the biggest Smiths fan ever. I loved every single tune by them. But now? The lyrics were horrible - yes I know alot of the lyrics were tongue in cheek but come on, girlfriend in a coma? I've never had a job because I'm too shy? The singing grates on ym nerves as well. His voice is hideous. I'd much rather listen to the Railway Children, who were pretty much a Smiths-knockoff band but weren't as silly. I like that when Johnny Marr was asked what song he was most proud of in his career he said 'Get the Message' by Electronic and not a Smiths song. My favorite Johnny Marr involved song has to be Kirsty Mccall's 'Walking Down Madison' or 'Another Bridge' by Everything but the Girl. Both were superior to any Smiths songs. Because the Smiths are boring. The Psychedelic Furs are the best british post punk band from the 80's anyway.
Paper Hearts Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 You are nuts. Although...i'll go with Furs for early 80s. Maybe Cabarat Voltaire...was great at some point in there, too. But again, you are batty.

Now (at least amongst my circle of friends), they're making this huge comeback and I can't stand it. I hate that guy's voice.
Msterbeau Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 They wrote poetry... such boody awful poetry. I tolerate them anyways. Speaking of the Furs... I want to hear President Gas now... you have to have a party when you're in a state like this you can really move it all you have to vote and change you have to get right out of it like out of all this mess you'll say yeah to anything if you believe all this but don't cry, don't do anything no lies, back in the government no tears, party time is here again president gas is up for president line up, put your kisses down say yeah, say yes again stand up, there's a head count president gas on everything but roller skates it's sick the price of medicine stand up, we'll put you on your feet again open up your eyes just to check that your asleep again president gas is president gas again he comes in from the left sometimes he comes in from the right it's so heavily advertised that he wants you and i it's a real cowboy set, electric company every day is happy days it's hell without the sin...
Head Wreck Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 emo can trace its origin back to that floppy haired mopy abomination. therefore the smiths caused all the worlds present ills
Paper Hearts Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 The Smiths were Emo? Hardly. The Smiths are the most successfull Indie rock band ever...the band that brought back guitar rock and took the ego out rock...perhaps. These guys just turned down the equivalent to 15m dollars for 3 shows....because they didn't want to play as a spectacle like the Stones or Bauhaus do...because they are still pushing forward as artists instead of selling out. Well at least that was pretty much Morrissey's and Marr's response... Were they very influential? With one of the greatest rock guitarists ever and some of the highest rated albums ever...and a lyrisist that critics judge against major contemporary poets...instead of other rock lyrists... Yeah maybe some of those pratts in Emo have heard of them.

I think they're important and all that stuff. Just because they're important doesn't mean I have to like them though. Hell, John Cage was important and I can't listen to his stuff.

Head Wreck Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 floppy haircut. check. dress style that is seemed to be thrown on without care. check. annoying whinny voice. check. manky-skanky fanbase (the meatmen said it not i). check. silly lyrics that make you want to shout "get over it allready". check. only thing it is missing out on is the three word bandname rule

Okay Mr wonder hair. Whiny lyrics? Try Joy Division. Do you know how many people on this website alone you are calling manky-skany with that statement? The Smiths were one of the most influential bands ever, they've inspired lots of people. Artistically speaking this band took on both synthpop and metal and not only held their ground, but some would argue won. Metal no longer has the super egos it had in the 80s and we're still hearing guitar rock on the radio. When these guys started playing there were no other bands like that really. You're allowed to not like their music, man, but you are suffering from bad perspective.
phee Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Influential to be sure... they are definitly EMO though.... and Joy Division... they were a bit as well... not to the Morresy level however

You're allowed to not like their music, man, but you are suffering from bad perspective. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Took on synthpop and won? First of all, Johnny Marr always wanted to use synths more in the Smiths but Morrissey wouldn't let him. Secondly, while the Smiths 'won' in the 90's - true most alternative bands stemmed from the Smiths in some shape or another - by the 2000's the synth had returned in full force. Echo and the Bunnymen.....now they ruled!

And I consider you and HW Emo enthusiats of the worst regard. Emo did not exist back then. I can link the music you make to Herman's Hermits, if you like as well, but i'd be just as wrong.
Blackmail Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 Influential to be sure... they are definitly EMO though.... and Joy Division... they were a bit as well... not to the Morresy level however <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I for one, as a huge Joy Division fan, will admit that Ian Curtis's lyrics were pretty awful. The only defense is that he really was depressed and over the top. The Cure, Morrrissey, (early) Martin Gore and Trent Reznor have no defense for their drivel. Sylvia Plath died along time ago, thank god.

Blackmail Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 Niether did Goth when Bauhaus started.... But if the shoe fits.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To be technical, Fugazi was the first emo band, they coined the term.....though they sound nothing like what is considered emo today. The Smiths were pretty freaking whiney though.
Head Wreck Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 okay experiment. go to a second rate rock night like what they have here. go to the indie rooms and watch how many emo's invade the room once the smiths start playing. it'll make most minds up. i have often pondered a huge net to pe rigged on that cieling and a couple of sets of battery operated hair trimmers and video them crying as we rid them of some pretty dire haircuts
sinmantyx Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Hell, John Cage was important and I can't listen to his stuff. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's awesome. I love you.

sass_in_the_pants Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I don't think they're boring. They just make me want to slit my wrists. I mean, sheesh, does EVERYTHING have to be so damned tragic?
Hellion Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Yes they were <{POST_SNAPBACK}> :devil Best record "Meat is Murder"IMO
Anathema Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Maybe Cabarat Voltaire...was great at some point in there, too. oh god, now i want to hear some Cab. Voltaire and i don't have any any more....thanks Paper Hearts! lol
