Paper Hearts Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I remember someone who used to be on this board saying that New Order was like Joy Division castrated. Her name was Cheez-Its or something. And she was right. I mean they obviously lack Ian Curtis, so they are not as good.
Blackmail Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Rolling Stone magazine http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/neworder/reviews Waiting for the Sirens Call - 4 out of 5 stars Retro (Box Set) - 4 out of 5 stars Get Ready - 3.5 out of 5 stars Republic - 4 out of 5 stars Technique - 3 out of 5 stars Power, Corruption and Lies - 4 out of 5 stars Trouser Press http://www.trouserpress.com/entry.php?a=new_order "Proceeding from a projected creative future of Joy Division, New Order sold million of records and became a global force, mutating from dance music to pop to rock (and back again) as fashions fluctuated. Their heady and uncompromising mix of dreamy meanderings and unforgettable techno-dance music can all be traced back to that memorable swansong, alleviating some of Curtis' lyrical suffering while retaining the depth and unique musical personality he outlined." and "Power, Corruption and Lies is a masterpiece, from the cryptic (but decipherable if you work hard at it) artwork to the eight lengthy tracks of state-of-the-creative-art electronic dance music. Blending moody strains of pseudo-strings with seemingly misplaced guitar bits and coldly kinetic rhythms, plus artless but engaging vocals and syncopated effects, deceptively simple tracks like "Age of Consent" and "Leave Me Alone" convey intense sensations that you can't easily shake. An emotionally and physically moving record by one of the era's most important bands." ALL MUSIC http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&s...k8jgtq7ztu42~T1 "Rising from the ashes of the legendary British post-punk unit Joy Division, the enigmatic New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of the 1980s; embracing the electronic textures and disco rhythms of the underground club culture many years in advance of its contemporaries, the group's pioneering fusion of new wave aesthetics and dance music successfully bridged the gap between the two worlds, creating a distinctively thoughtful and oblique brand of synth pop appealing equally to the mind, body, and soul. " NME http://www.nme.com/reviews/new-order/6472 "Mournful, hedonistic, poignant and life affirming, New Order are everything a great pop group should be. Tonight's performance is justification enough for their continued presence after 25 years of death, illness, drugs and fighting. They stopped the rain, but it didn't matter. Everyone is walking on air anyway."
Blackmail Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I like Joy Division quite a bit. I just think they became much better songwriters and musicians as New Order. Johnny Marr decided that Bernard Sumner was alot cooler than Morrissey: Like how I have used Marr against you in three threads now?
Msterbeau Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Ted. Who cares what anyone else thinks. :-P Joy Division had a few great tunes and they influenced many acts I think... But the potential with Ian Curtiss alive will always be unknown. I think New Order kicks ass. I give their members extra points since they didn't commit suicide. Death does not make you better.
Paper Hearts Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 Marr lists Sumner as one his favorite guitar players ever. And I agree w/ him. You are entitled to read all the magazines you like...but Joy Division was better and cooler because of Mr Curtis. And that's that.

Bottom line for me: New Order rules and so does Joy Division. Two of the best bands ever in my opinion.

Gothmama25 Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 I have never heard any of Joy Divisions music. But I love New Order and they got some really good songs.
Guest Game of Chance Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Joy Division hands down. The earlier the better.
