Does anyone like dark folk?

I was just curious if anyone on the board was interested in these bands (or others). It seems like I never have seen anyone actually talk about them on the board. I know they're pretty obscure, but they also fit pretty well with the whole goth thing. I'm currently obsessed with Sol Invictus.

I mean, come on, how cool are these lyrics:

SAWNEY BEAN

A family inbred like serpents entwined

Had no heart and little mind

A clan of madness, a terrible scene

They cursed the earth—the Sawney Bean

Lurking in the fog a fearsome brood

Poor traveling folk they caught and slew

No graves have the victims of these ghouls and fiends

Those taken and eaten by—the Sawney Bean

From their flesh they made a meal

Their skin the floor for their bairns to kneel

Their skulls a table from which to feed

Alas the victims of—the Sawney Bean

They lived by the sword, were felled by the axe

And I say "nothing wrong with that"

But in their hellish caves worse than any dream

Cursed with the stench of—the Sawney Bean

Some are haunted by the tolling bell

Some by the fiery pits of hell

But what haunts me is what we did see

When we entered the larder of—the Sawney Bean

Yeah (in my book, anyway). He's freaking awesome. I love Henry's Dream.

If you like Nick Cave, you should really give the other guys a try that I listed. It's basically medievil folk guitars/violins with synthesizers. Plus the lyrics tend to be darker and more cynical. If you have soulseek installed, that's a great place to start, since their CDs are fairly expensive. My recommendation for a first pick: Sol Invictus "Trees in Winter"

I believe I will....

Are you into "Mirranda Sex Garden"?

Hmmmm, I've never actually heard anything by them, though I've heard the name mentioned before. What type of music is it? Along those same lines?

Yes.... very female driven and spooky folk

Still trying to bump this. I want people to check this music out. Here are some other excellent lyrics.

Sol Invictus - Here am i

Here am I, above this world

A face in flames and a knowing smile

Dream your dreams and tread your paths

It all ends the same, alone in the dark

And here am I drunk and bored

Even I don't want to drink any more

Here you are drunk and scared

You have finally realised that life's not fair

Outside they are gathering and their fangs are bared

For the bigger your fangs, the bigger your share

What deity made us, was it a good idea?

In theory maybe, in practice, oh dear

And here am I drunk and bored

Even I don't want to drink any more

Here you are drunk and scared

You have finally realised that life's not fair

Here am I, above this world

A face in flames and a knowing smile

Dream your dreams and tread your paths

It all ends the same, alone in the dark

And here am I drunk and bored

Even I don't want to drink any more

Here you are drunk and scared

You have finally realised that life's not fair

Yeah, I dig Death In June, Current 93, Sol Invictus, and Sixth Comm.

Sorry, just read this. So are we the only two people in the state of Michigan that listen to this stuff? I'd love to start a dark-folk band, but it just seems like no one else is really into it.

Just curious....

Ever heard of Eden?

Nope. New to me. What do they sound like?

<sigh> I've really got to go home and download some stuff and update my mp3 player. Maybe I'll do it tonight. Are there any specific albums you recommend from Miranda Sex Garden or Eden?

There are others but they've either stopped going out or have moved. Adam Cadaver and Brian The Brain used to spin a lot of dark folk(as well as death rock and darkwave) when they used to dj at The Labyrinth.

Yeah, I guess I don't really view Michigan as the dark folk capital of the world. I'd probably call that England, but I can't exactly move there. :wink So how is Sixth Comm? I've heard the name before, but never heard any of the music. The thing that I have the biggest problem with with dark folk is that the singers tend to sound whiny (Current 93, anyone?). What does their singer sound like?

I think you'd dig Sixx Comm - vocals are more like Death In June's Douglas P. Interesting thing is that there is a connection between these bands.

Yeah, I read up on them after you suggested them. Death in June spawned them just like they spawned Sol Invictus. I'm in the midst of downloading a whole bunch of stuff at the moment. My current favorite that I just downloaded is Of the Wand and the Moon. Freaking awesome. I love the lyrics and the vocals.
