Call centers coming home again?

BusinessWeek is running an article about how outsourcing call centers in India are no longer an 'inexpensive option' for American companies. These shops are now striving for better outsourced work from the U.S. and Europe multinational companies; many are fed up with U.S. clients trying to continually lower prices. New Delhi-based EXL Services, for example, terminated a contract with Dell Inc. because EXL was losing money in the deal.

The business community gets very groupthink about these things. Outsourcing was touted as THE way to save your bottom line. EVERYBODY'S doing it they said. Like it was a panacea for every financial woe in the business world. Before that, it was dot-com euphoria. People will buy ANYTHING if you sell it through the Internet, they said. Anyone remember that website that sold pet stuff online? Cuz, um, yeah, I really want FIFTY pouds of puppy chow shipped to my house.

And then, after everyone's high wears off, they all sober up and go "oh shit, I guess that wasn't such a hot idea. Eh. I'm still going to spend my bonus on cocaine and hookers." and then the whole process starts again.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a capitalist down to my marrow. I just wish people would think things through a little.

Actually, when I had cable with one of the local companies (I won't mention their name), everytime I had an issue I found I was actually being linked to a call center in India.

Those fuckers who do the support at Dell...man, are they frustrating. The finance group fucked up my account and it took me 3 months to get it figured out.

Glad to hear that they're doing something about it.

Y'know, I actually work some IT stuff at my job, and I had to call into them for a replacement part. The very first guy I got on the phone turned out to be a Canadian. He was cool and smart. He actually used to be an IT professor who was just doing this stuff in his retirement. He did say "aboot" and "eh?" a lot though...
