So the girls and I are riding home from watching old cars cruising Woodward earlier this evening. We're crossing a semi-busy intersection, we've got the walk signal, Ariane is in front of me a little and Kyra next to me.

I notice a woman signaling a right turn...looking the wrong way and starting to pull out. I start yelling at the top of my lungs but she fails to stop. Just as she's about to strike Ariane her boyfriend/husband catches what I'm yelling about and screams at her to stop. Too late. She crashes into Ariane squarely in the side and knocks her over just as she applies the brakes.

I'm off my bike in an instant. I look at the woman and curse, bringing my fist down on her hood as I'm running to Ariane. She's crying, which is a good sign. After a quick cursery check I scoop her up, carry her to the grass and sit down with her to calm her down and do a more thorough lookover. I see scrapes on her legs and a couple scratches and gouges. She's complaining of a sore knee but otherwise seems OK.

She calms down fairly quickly... about the time the cops show up. I ask them to call the paramedics to check her over. They show up a few minutes later. After a few questions and a few diagnostic checks they think she's basically alright. They ask if she hit her head. I hadn't seen any indication that she did... so I pick up her helmet. It has a significant crack on the left rear portion. She hit her head alright. The helmet saved her. Big time. After checking a little closer they think she's still OK... but they caution me to keep and eye on her and bring her to the hospital if any symptoms of concussion become apparent.

Since her bike seemed a little the worse for wear (The firemen tweeks things back mostly though. Rah for them!) and she wasn't in the mood to ride... the girls got to ride home in a police car. They thought that was fun. He didn't have room for me so I asked him if he'd take the girls by themselves and I'd ride home. That worked.

When I met back up with them, the cop mentioned I probably shouldn't go hitting car hoods, but he didn't blame me considering the circumstances... :whistling

After a little talk about making sure to keep our eyes looking for danger (But making sure she understood too that it wasn't her fault.) we had a little ice cream and off they went to bed. Ariane has an ice pack on her knee but is otherwise in good shape and spirits.

It could have ended much worse.....

Thank goodness... there are way too many totally careless drivers on the road. That person needs to go to traffic school.

Except for that momentary surge of parental vengence... I was surprised I was able to remain as calm as I did. I think I realized fairly quickly that she was in decent shape. If she had gotten hit harder and bled more, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have remained so composed.

Wow Marc.

Your Ariane is one tough little girl. I know, I've met her.

Do tell her I hope she feels better soon.

As for you, good job handling it so well. Such a difficult situation, that could have ended much worse.

So glad she's alright. What a nightmare.

Yikes. That was a close call. So glad she is going to be fine now.

Not that it's a big surprise... but Ariane is WAY more likely to be upset over something emotional then physical. She was a real trooper tonight.

Thanks for the comments and concern ladies. :-)

I would have punched the shit out of that woman.

But I have anger problems.

I hope she feels better. What a trooper.

*hey marc, want me to beat the shit out of her?*

I think the dent in her hood should suffice as a reminder of her oops. The look I saw on her face makes me think she won't be forgetting this for some time... No further punishment necessary. :whistling

What a shame. I really need to punch someone in the face. And soon.

Can you hang on till the end of September? I'm sure that the need will arise again.

O My Marc.... :blink

Wow, what an idiot....that woman. I hope she groveled at your feet.

Just glad to hear that little girl is OK!

What a scare.

I'm pretty sure they'll still be assholes then. In this weeks frame of mind, I'd pay for a ticket to have you do it now though. I need to make more money so I can afford luxeries like that. :laughing

I'm glad your little girl is all right.

I hope that woman holds onto that dented car for a long, long time.

What a jerknose lady! Hooray for bike helmets! And horseback riding helmets...and fuck it, helmets in general. :cheerful they look a little silly, but they are necessary for times when you don't want your brain smashed.
