Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 1. Only one, ONE, person has ever been burnt at the stake in the United States as the result of a Trial. It was NOT for being a witch. It was for molesting and murdering a small girl. 2. The Roman's, under Nero's rule, burned more Christians alive than the Catholics burned "witches" during the Inquisition.
phee Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 According to Encarta: "Salem Witch Trials, trials that occurred during the years 1692 and 1693 in the eastern counties of colonial Massachusetts in which people were accused of being witches. Over the course of the spring and summer of 1692, 14 women and 5 men were hanged, another suspect was pressed to death under heavy stones when he refused to take part in his trial, 4 people died in jail awaiting their trials, and nearly 200 other people were arrested."

Find any data for stake burnings, though? Because apparently that matters for some reason, that only one person was burned instead of hanged or pressed or starved or drowned or godknowswhatever.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 and said person was not burned at the Salem Witch trials.
phee Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 and said person was not burned at the Salem Witch trials. Ok... did someone say that they were?
phee Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Okeeday More interesting Trivia "At the same time, other developments created a climate in which alleged witches were stigmatized as representatives of evil. Since the middle of the 11th century, the theological and philosophical work of scholasticism had been refining the Christian concepts of Satan and evil. Theologians, influenced by Aristotelian rationalism, increasingly denied that “natural” miracles could take place and therefore alleged that anything supernatural and not of God must be due to commerce with Satan or his minions (see Aristotle). Later, the Reformation, the rise of science, and the emerging modern world—all challenges to traditional religion—created deep anxieties in the orthodox population. At the dawn of the Renaissance (15th century to 16th century) some of these developments began to coalesce into the “witch craze” that possessed Europe from about 1450 to 1700. During this period, thousands of people, mostly innocent women, were executed on the basis of “proofs” or “confessions” of diabolical witchcraft—that is, of sorcery practiced through allegiance to Satan—obtained by means of cruel tortures."
Homicidalheathen Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 This is what I always hear about, and yes...I am a witch. Msterbeau Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I was in Salem this past Spring. I picked up a few books about various aspects of the Witch Trials. Haven't read them yet... I have no further trivia to contribute at this time.
BrassFusion Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I hear that if you drop a raisin in a glass of fresh champagne, it will bounce continually from the bottom of the glass to the surface and back.

BrassFusion Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 nope.you want to do that with a hard boiled egg or a good chunk o spam I read it on a poster on the inside of the bathroom stall at City Club, so it MUST be true.

Msterbeau Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Did you know that race cars (Formula 1, NASCAR, etc) have pure nitrogen in their tires? Why? Because it doesn't absorb moisture or expand as it gets hot.
BrassFusion Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 That must be why Belle Tire offers "nitronizing" where they inflate you up with nitrogen. May or may not be pure. Stewardesses is the longest word you can type with just your left hand on a QWERTY keyboard.
Msterbeau Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 That must be why Belle Tire offers "nitronizing" where they inflate you up with nitrogen. May or may not be pure. I'm not sure it has much benefit in a normal passenger car. In race cars it means consistant tire pressures - no wondering how high the pressures will climb after a session on the track. Race cars/drivers are sensitive to even a pound difference so this is important.
Msterbeau Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 If you want to read a discussion about the nitrogen in road cars thing: http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=120996&page=1
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 According to all the tire places that are trying to get you to give them $5 per tire to put Nitrogen in your tires... it saves you gas. You get constant correct air pressure in your tires and fewer leaks.
torn asunder Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Because it doesn't absorb moisture or expand as it gets hot. all gases expand as they get hot...
Msterbeau Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 all gases expand as they get hot... Not as much as they do with moisture in em... :-) Let's just say the EFFECTIVELY, in this case, they don't.
jadnifer Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Well for some trivia...... Rubber bands last longer if kept in the fridge For a funny one: 1 out of 4 people have mental issues. Look at three of your closest friends. If they look okay, then its you Is that 1 in 4 thing true though?
Fierce Critter Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Bookkeeper is, I believe, the only word in the English language with three sets of double letters together.
Msterbeau Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 For a funny one: 1 out of 4 people have mental issues. Look at three of your closest friends. If they look okay, then its you Is that 1 in 4 thing true though? 1 in 4? I'd say EVERYONE has mental issues. Some are just more severe/apparent then others.
