The article was a little ambiguous, but I guess they threw out the entire case...? I wish there were more details.

Anyway.

How do you guys feel about hate crimes? To me it seems a little ridiculous to take legal action against someone who sets you on fire because they called you a "faggot" or whatever while they were doing it- and that enforcing anti-hate speech laws would only create more friction between hate groups and their targets. I know they don't have the "first amendment" in France, or at least not in the entirely same context, but that's more important to my personal set of values than feeling offended by whatever ignorant epithets anyone could throw at you. Thoughts?

By civil rights, I assume you mean during a voting process or a job interview or something. That, I can agree with.

And yeah, how could dousing someone with gas and setting them on fire be unintentional? I guess they just felt they didn't have enough evidence to convict the perpetrators.

Really, I don't think we should have thought police. If I beat some homosexual half to death... does it really matter why? I assulted a person, in this case, my thoughts should only be considered when deciding if it was justified. Maybe the guy just molested one of my kids. If the only reason I beat him up was that he was gay... why is it a worse crime than beating up a straight man? It just means I dislike him enough to get physical. Last I checked... there is no law that says I have to like everyone. "Hate Crimes" are thought control. Frankly, I will like or dislike whom ever I want for what ever reasons I have. If you can't deal with that... grow up and get a clue. Not everyone likes everyone. I have never met anyone that likes everyone.
