Wtf? Mourning Doves?

I once cored a bird like an apple with my .22, then realized that killing for sport is wrong. Hunting mourning doves makes no damn sense. Why would you want to pass something that would let you kill a bird for sport? Hunting for food, yes. Killing a dangerous animal in self defense, yes. Performing a mercy killing, yes. But for sport?

"Flies and mosquitos; because they're pests. Cows and chickens; because we're hungry. Lions and tigers; because it's fun! Quails and peacocks; because it's fun, and we're hungry. And people, we even kill people; because they're pests! And it's FUN" George Carlin.!

Some people actually eat doves.

And it's not like I know dick about the dove-cosystem (uh, dove ecosystem), but if they're overpopulated, it might be worth while to thin the fuckers out. prop 3 would keep tabs on the bird population, among other things.

Vote "Yes" on 3!!!!!

Oh wait... little late for that...

I voted yes, and got shut down :(

Why? There's no meat on those things and there's no overpopulation. Silly boy.

How about why NOT? Shouldn't we have the inalienable right to kill God's creatures as long as we preserve populations when they're getting thinned out?

Hunting helps balance our ecosystems... And... and... doves are stupid...

I voted No on 3.

Mourning Doves are beautiful birds.

They have such a pretty song to sing.

I have a bird feeder.

ALL of the other birds swoop at the squirrels, while the Doves eat in peace with the squirrels!

They never get greedy with the feeder either....most of the other birds will fight over the perches, whereas the Doves wait patiently for stray seeds to fall!

No wonder they are the "peace" bird.

Rabbits are cute. That doesn't prevent me from killing them. The fear in their black little eyes the instant before impact, the KNOWLEDGE that they're going to die... that's what gets me moist.

But yes. Doves are stupid, just like any other bird. They're probably tasty. And it's not just about doves, here. It's about my right to kill them despite your imagined emotional attachment to them. Trust me, they don't even know you're alive.

I also voted No. The sound of doves cooing early in the morning is very soothing... mornings are depressing for me & hearing the doves makes it a little easier. And there really isn't any logical reason for hunting them... I could be wrong but can't imagine they taste substantially different from the pigeons that are raised for meat (& therefore have a lot more of it). Of course this is just my own personal opinion but... I feel like anyone who wants to go out of their way to kill an archetypal symbol of peace has some issues they need to be dealing with.

I found the advertisements by groups like the NRA and Michigan Outdoors absurd and ridiculous.

I too am against dove hunting. But groups like those are going overboard and acting exceptionally paranoid proclaiming that "anti-hunters" will use this as a first step to banning ALL hunting in Michigan.

Ridiculous. I love a good venison dinner as much as Ted Nugent - wish I had a freezer stocked now, but I don't :(. And Jon's planning on his first try deer hunting probably next year. But I don't get people who feel a need to blow every single animal in the world to kingdom come.

But that's exactly it, FC, it's a slippery slope. If you want to be one of 11 states that enforces a ban on hunting a particular animal for NO OTHER REASON than "they're cute" or some variant of that, quails are next. Then pheasants. Then rabbits. Then deer. I honestly wouldn't go "out of my way" to kill any particular species, but shouldn't we have the right if there's no real reason not to?

Edit: I heard some figures that say doves have such a short lifespan/life expectancy that hunting would barely affect their population.

I'd just like to point out that nobody was trying to take away anything. This was adding to what already existed.

And Alan... if you need to blow 20 of them outta the air to make a decent meal... it's time to look for something else to hunt.

Your right to kill doves? Starvation has obviously made you delusional: you have no right to shoot doves in Michigan. If you must shoot doves, remember to request the vegan diet when they put you in jail--I hear it's brilliant. Meanwhile, we'll keep an eye on the dove population for you, make sure they don't get out of hand; if they do maybe they'll let you out to 'Rambo' the songbird population back to a safe level, but I doubt they will. -Ridiculous.

Doves have just as much meat on them as Partridge or pheasant. Which we have hunting seasons for. Irf we made the choice of what to hunt based on how much meat an animal has then we should be hunting white tailed hawks. They have HUGE breasts.

How cute the song a bird makes? OK, you eat turkey? Cause wild turkey sound pretty damn cool in the woods.

BTW... Dove hunting was made legal in Michigan about a year ago. It was challanged. It was then put onthe ballet for the peopel to decide. It just wanted talked about a lot that it was in fact already legal.

I was unaware that doves could be eaten, and that it was already legal. Forgive my ignorance all.

There isn't an animal on this planet you can't eat. Some take a bit of prep before they are safe... barracuda, blow fish... but they are still made of meat.

The public act removing the dove hunting ban in Michigan was in 2004, and yeah, prop 3 was a public referendum on it. Doves have been dying since 2004, that is. And they'll continue to die in 39 states. Just not ours. It's great that they'll have a sanctuary in Michigan, though. I hope the Audobon Society prints up pamphlets and hands them out to doves in states where dove hunting remains legal, so they'll know to fly up here.

And forgive my sarcasm, but I don't see how anyone can take this issue 100% seriously. They're just DOVES, people. Just as smelly as pigeons and seagulls... but prettier.

Edit: Oh. And before I forget.

Hunting is a hell of a lot more sporting and humane than almost any farmed meat. PH, I know I'm preaching to the choir, in your case... but would you rather I ate a tortured chicken from KFC?

I believe that anyone living as near the city as us is more apt to consume the worst factory farmed animal products, more often than anything else, regardless, rather than barely surviving via a menu of robins, bald eagles and mourning doves. If you are really seeking my advice on what foods you should consume, I would recommend "Certified Humane" animal products only (if we are discussing animal products) because "Free-Range", "Organic", "Natural", "USDA Certified", "No Hormones" and "No Antibiotics" do not go far enough. And I would keep away from Milk products completely--beyond ethical reasons, replacing the milk in one’s diet with beer is actually more healthy, if that means anything to you.

i heard it was legal to hunt mourning doves year round. the proposal would have stoped that by creating a spacific season with liscences taxes and tags to buy there were also alot of unnoticed ammendmeants about new funding for certian dnr facilities.

so if you voted yes cause you wanted to hunt doves then don't ever start hunting

Guess what? Pigeons and mourning doves are both doves. Pigeons are actually rock doves and they come in some really interesting varieties. For further interest check out some live ones at the state fair next year.

I figure if you want to eat it you can shoot it. If you're not gonna eat it, don't shoot it!
