The Kanuck Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Ok, so I have noticed that there is alot of new people that have come on to this board and there is nothing wrong with that but the fact that they are each only posting one topic and then stop posting and each post is about something retard, such as Britney Spears being preg or a nude meeting that turns out to be a porn site... well that is just not right. I know there is nothing we can really do but like.. wtf? I know I am just ranting and such but there might be something we can do. I really don't want this site here turning into a crappy site. Sorry if I am completely wrong on this but I thought I would point this out.
BrassFusion Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Nah, you're totally right. Spam blows. The only reliable way to circumvent that sort of thing (that I know of) is to have admin approve all new accounts, but that would probably be a pain in the ass for everyone involved.
Homicidalheathen Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 well I ignore them. And respond to worthwhile posts and peeps I know. That helps. Oh, and I pick on spammers.
Hellion Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Yeah,Its like 5-10 newbies a week,wtf.5-10 annoying threads along with it.
Homicidalheathen Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I think its cause we are on myspace now
phee Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I think its cause we are on myspace now You are absolutely right... That also explains the influx of spam
Onyx Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Yep, it's the myspace attracting the spam-bots most likely. I delete the posts and block the spammer's posting ability as fast as I can whenever I see them. I hate spammers. I suspect responding to these posts before we can ban them may attract more spam. Does anyone know if that is true?
Hellion Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Yeah no one uses the PM deal on DGN anymore just go to myspace where half of the world has an account with.

Troy Spiral (13) Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 The Dual reason for the increase in spammers: - The spam bot software which creates bogus accounts , isn't being filtered out as well as it was before. The spammers have gotten more advanced. Fixes incomming for this suppsoedly with the next version of the DGN board Invision Power Board software. - We are now ranked higher than we ever were before on many key google search terms due to me playing lots of games with various settings of the board. This is a good thing but like everything can have some cons to it as it makes us more visible to spam bot scanning software. Google and Yahoo are the primary sources "web based" incomming traffic to DGN. We have a virtual lock on search terms like "Michigan Gothic" "Detroit Gothic" ect. (FINALLY) But, the real incomming traffic comes from direct conects. That is people come straight here due to somone suggesting DGN to them personally. Web-based promotion while helpful, isnt all that great for "local communties". The good promotion is the old fashion kind. The incomming traffic via MySpace is very low. Also the DGN PM system is in higher use now than it has been in a long time. (nothing to do with spam)
The Kanuck Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 hmm. Where I am truely happy that many new people are showing up to this site, the ones that are actually interested in it. I find myself almost dreading posting new posts about certain lets say... personal matters that I believe people on here can help me with but having dumbasses like these people who come on here just to fuck around with it slam my post into the ground 6 feet deep. I know there is no real way of stoping them short of scanning everyone that signs up to see if they really are interested with this sort of thing. Maybe we could make the filter a little better?
Troy Spiral (13) Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I think we might be talking about different subjects Kanuck. The stuff im refering to really is just sort of random idiot spam that isnt even really "posts" like some new account appears... makes 1 post and its some link to a website. It sounds like your talking about specific problems with specific posters? If thats the case that'd have to be solved on a per-poster basis.
