The Draft

I'm just glad I signed up before the Dems got into their seats in Congress/Senate. Cuz that 40,000 dollar sign on bonus limit is going to disappear real soon I'm betting.

As far as going to Iraq, I'm probably going to volunteer to go there when I finish my training. I'll come back with a loaded bank account if I don't get my ass killed. And if I do, well, I won't have to worry about money anymore anyways. Either way it's a good deal.

Hey guy, I hate to burst your bubble, but when i was considering going back into the military, they only offered a $20,000... how'de you get $40,000???

Also, if you get a bonus like those I've mentioned, Iraq isn't an option, it's a requirement, a little hidden deal I was able to be sharp enough to spot on the contract. At least a year and a half's worth of your time out there. And it aint just iraq, you'll be going to places worse than Iraq. And as for me being against the draft, hell I've already done my time out there, it's completely pointless to even be out there. What it all boils down too... The rich people are just all butt hurt that their not making money fast enough, like they don't have enough already.

My feelings for those who will read them.

Why I want to serve.

1. Not happy in general.

2. No girlfriend. Shit Job, half education.

3. No reason to stay here. Life don't mean shit to me.

Why I stay.

1. Wake up every day the same bitter, lonely person and trudge on hoping for things to change.

2. A soldier told me that if I ever joined, go OCS. They need good officers.

3. I don't know if I'm ready for change.

On the draft.

1. Whatever motherfuckers. I'll get even after we're dead.

Yes!!!! I totally agree with Crank. Put all the convicted felins and murders and all those doing time in prison into the millitary, better to have them doing something good for this country instead of draining tax payer money rotting in prison.

Oh and BTW< that senator Rangel person said he was just bringing up the draft to make a point, and that he Knows that it has NO chance of becoming law.

I doubt you could force a prisoner to be a good soldier. They'd raise holy hell to get out of doing anything responsible, because they'd have nothing to lose.

That sounds vastly more likely.

Well the minute any prisoner even thinks of turning on any of the soldiers, they will get shot dead instead, thats

what I would do if one of them even thought od doing something like this.after the war leave the criminals there in

the desert, well they at least have their freedom, just not on our soil.and taxdollars.IMO

If you want to send criminals in, drop them in North Korea and just let them have at it. We don't have any troops for there and we already know they actually have nukes. Right before you push the inmates out of the plane hand them guns and rounds.

Here's the thing- we don't want them to know it was the US that's dropping off all their lifetime and death-row inmates, so we can't use US planes.

However- reason #1 to not do this- it targets innocent civilians that have nothing to do with any of this.

Talk of the draft has been going on for a while now. Two years ago a bill was passed that stated a draft would be legal, that both male and females between the ages of 18 and 35 would be drafted in the event of its being activated, and that there would be no college exemption. They reinstated a federal draft board after this bill went through. They're just waiting for the right moment.

I'll go to jail before I go to war

yeah. fuck the draft. fuck war. i don't have anything useful to say here so i will leave it at that.

maeve, are you sure that passed? The dems wrote a bill very much like that about two years ago.. the repubilcans forced a vote and it failed to pass.

unfortunately, they've tried this idea before, just in different forms.

You screw up and gotta go before a judge facing some serious prision time, they once gave them a choice, either go to prision, or enlist into the Marines. I've served with a few that were in that situation and obviously chose a 4 year enlistment, and they were crap soldiers to work with, not much of hardened killers, but you could tell their interests were only for themselves, and though they'd do what they were supposed to most the time, you could always tell they'd be someone you couldn't count on in battle. I know the draft is a method to get the masses to revolt the war in iraq even more... but it's stuff like that that prior service members have to be very aware of, cuz it's getting close enough where before they'd actually administer a draft, they could RECALL prior service members. Seeing stuff on CNN doesn't give me good feelings about the future either. So, as unlikely as the draft is, the likelyhood of a recall is more potential. That's something the american public wouldn't belly ache too much about...

Hey Gaf,

Yes, I'm sure it passed. It was turned down either once or twice, but then ended up going through. Some people on my campus were discussing it during a Table Talk session concerning the Iraq war. It would most likely take me a while to dig it up, but I know that I have information on it somewhere, such as the title (or number) of the bill and the info on the vote. I'll try to look around for it but it might be a while before I do. I have two 20 page research papers to complete and a buttload of finals to study for before the 11th of Dec. so I can't promise that I'll have it before then. After the semester is over I 'll be able to take the time.

OK.. but like... The Selective Serivce was reinstated in the late 70's by Carter... Thats the government body that men have to register with in case there is ever a draft... in order to draft women... they would have to register with the Selective Service like men do.. and thats not required. Also, local draft boards we created at that time, though most "seats" are empty on local draft boards until such a time as the draft being reinstated. So I am not sure how a "draft board" was created or how it is going to require that women can be drafted. and..

Fromt he selective service website...

WOMEN AND THE DRAFT Printer Friendly Version

Women Aren't Required to Register

Here's why:

THE LAW

Selective Service law as it's written now refers specifically to "male persons" in stating who must register and who would be drafted. For women to be required to register with Selective Service, Congress would have to amend the law.

THE SUPREME COURT

The constitutionality of excluding women was tested in the courts. A Supreme Court decision in 1981, Rostker v. Goldberg, held that registering only men did not violate the due process clause of the Constitution.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

At President Clinton's request, the Department of Defense reviewed this issue in 1994. DoD noted that America's prior drafts were used to supply adequate numbers of Army ground combat troops. Because women are excluded by policy from front line combat positions, excluding them from the draft process remains justifiable in DoD's view. Although no conclusions were reached, DoD recognized that policies regarding women need to be reviewed periodically because the role of women in the military continues to expand.

The Selective Service System, if given the mission and additional funding, is capable of registering and drafting women with its existing infrastructure.

and then there is this...

Truth or Fiction?

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
