Mythbusters And Cooking Oil Fuel

On Mythbusters tonight, they proved that a diesel engine car can start and run on used cooking oil.

How cool is that? Just think, if you own a car that has a diesel engine, right now you can pour used cooking oil into your gas tank and drive.

The fuel efficiency is only 10% less than standard diesel gas fuel that you would buy at a gas station.

With gas prices as bad as they are, I'm seriously thinking about doing this - regardless if people laugh at me.

Think of the money you can save by doing this. This is truly cool stuff - I knew there was a reason why I loved this show - those guys are frickin' awesome.

Edit: I forgot to add - they did nothing to modify the test engine of the car they used.

wow. Think of all the free fuel that's going to waste.

Let us know if you try it.

Wonder what it does to the engine over time? Maybe it would even last longer - all that oil might be less wear and tear on moving parts?

The correct term for this is "biodiesel".

I'll wait for Mr. Fusion, which shouldn't be too far off.

Haven't found any offers yet from anyone who wants to be Mr. Fusion, but I'll let you know.

the smell from the engine is very sweet, and in winter its good to put a bit of diesel in with the oil.

diesel engines were originaly designed and concieved to run on peanut oil.

Ok Marty - I think Dr. Emmett Brown is working on it. :grin

IIRC old man Diesel (that was his last name) designed his engine to run on vegatable oil. the problem was that it was expensive. At the time, the oil companies only sold gasoline and kerosene. They had this other stuff that they could not sell (so they poured it out after refining)... it turns out that stuff would work in Diesel's engine... thats how diesel fuel came into being.
