States Rights Vs. National Standards.

i generally can't take a side in the whole "state's rights!" vs. "federal regulations!" thing cuz i never understood what the difference is between being controlled by elected officials who live 100 miles away and elected officials who live 1,000 miles away.

but this... this sounds stupid. telling california they can't set the bar higher on pollutant control is like... duh. that makes NO sense to me. i could see how someone might stand to profit from the measure passing, but political profit shouldn't be the only motivator...

Some things are more appropriately handled by the states, and some by the federal government. Enviornmental issues would be one of those things that I think would be best handled at the federal level. If California bans certain pesticides, for example, and Nevada doesn't, well, what's the point of that? What if Michigan passed laws on reducing the number of gasoline powered boats in the Great Lakes, but Ohio didn't? Well, people would register their boats in Ohio and then bring them back up to Michigan, so that doesn't really help anybody now does it? Manufacturing standards, too, I would LOVE to see them set on an international level, but I'd take national. Otherwise, administrative costs for manufacturers become disproprtionately high - I can sell my cars in MI, but not my trucks - I can sell those in Ohio, but they have to have backwards facing seats, that sort of thing. It just gets too confusing to manage.

Where I disagree with the current administration is that I would like to see stricter standards on environmental regulations, but I want them applied across the board.

Well, let me first say that people need to read the Constitution. States Rights and Federal powers are clearly outlined in it. The Federal government has total control over anything that crosses states Lines and any dealings with other counties... everything else falls under the jurisdiction of the individual states.

I would have to do more research to really give my 2 cents on the actual subjects brought up here. I would need to find sources without political bias.. very hard I know. I would love to see the actual bills and treatys in question.

Something I would like to point out... there is a very hard push right now to get DDT put back into use. All the fears that were pushed so hard by the Enviromentalists back in the 70s that got it band are turning out to be wrong. Long term studies have found no affects as predicted back in the 70s. If we did bring it back into use we could save thousands of lives in S. Africa every day by stopping the mallaria outbreaks as spread by insects.

Well what happens if I take my car into Cali? Will I be fined? If California has these standards for auto emissions, what does it matter when you consider the large quantity of tourism? Are you going to fine a major source of income because their cars don't fit your standards? That's obsurd! And, well, pointless.
