DJ Saint Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Phantom West "Aleph Null" CD Listening Party February 16 at City Club Phantom West delivers a breath of fresh air to electronic music by using modern electronic beats and precision built melodies. While other acts reject the sound of traditional instruments, Phantom West embraces them and brings them into the digital realm where he polishes their sounds until they fit perfectly into the compositions he produces. Taking elements from classic synthpop and EBM and classic industrial, Phantom West's music evokes memories of many bands from decades past such as New Order (a cover version of "Doubts Even Here" appears on Aleph Null) and Depeche Mode, but adds a touch of modernism and experimentation that bring to mind the elaborate work of Coil in their more melodic state. Phantom West is the soundtrack to a sci-fi movie that was never filmed, but exists in our collective minds and ears. If there is one thing that you can rely on when it comes to Phantom West, it is, ironically, unpredictability. The striking yet harmonious differences between his first full-length release, Chimaera, and the follow-up EP, The Rain Expedition, were already enough to strike the curiosity of any synthpop aficionado. The latter project's softer more melodic sound is nothing like the complex instrumentals from his first release, which is epic and dystopian in its musical execution, although both works still manage to effortlessly retain the cinematic aspect that has quickly become a trademark of the Phantom West sound. His latest and most fully realized project to date, Aleph Null, is yet another key piece in his impressive repertoire and one that clearly marks him as a fantastically unpredictable artist.
