2 things. one that should be reason enough for parents not to overmedicate at the sign of a little flightyness. two, i honestly dont know why theyre buying it for 5 bucks a pill, i could probably go get my doctor to give me a perscription for it right now, and ive been off of it for 4 years. doctors are stupid

some ex friends of mine would go to this doctor in detroit on warren & southfield rds cause he would prescribe whatever they wanted. i hate those kind of doctors.

im not saying shell perscribe whatever i want im just saying that (especially if your over 18) if you go into a doctor with symptoms (even if your faking it) quite often theyll give you meds to treat thos symptoms

I have a daughter who is a teen. This stuff has been happening since I was a teen. It's nothing new at all.

I really think a parent is much better off concentrating on listening to your children and being a good example than worrying about every single news report about this and that. A good self image and self esteem will do a child much more good than a parent who suspects them at every turn. If a child feels they can't talk to you then you have major problems on the way.

I'm just wondering why all these parents have a medicine cabinet full of narcotics. Something isn't right there.

As parents we set the example. Teach your children that medicines are not to be taken lightly, that you use the right med for what ails you and that medicines are not to be used as mood enhancers. And practice what you preach. If they still do it, figure out why... or who's influencing them and talk about it. That still may not be enough...

Because I was in a serious car accident in 2001. I only take meds as perscribed and as needed. A bottle of pain meds will last me over a year usually.

As my kids get older, I will probably lock that cabinet. I will probably also lock my daughters psychiatric medications up in it.

I know someone who at least until last year was on ADHD medication. He claimed it helped him stay awake. He's nearly 30. Then again, he abused other people's psychatric meds. He was also an alcoholic on all these meds.

My daughter is one of those children who clearly needs it. Hopefully she'll get to an age where she can control it without medication, but she's on other psychiatric meds as well, not just ADHD meds.

Teens Getting Buzzed on Prescription Drugs

This is scary and makes me worry. I hope that when my daughter is a teenager she is able to make the right choices and not do any drugs.

seriously, my personal opinions aside, what's wrong with drugs? i mean, drugs themselves? nothing, as far as i can see... the problem is that people have very little-to-no self-control. what's wrong with alcohol? it's legal!! same thing - self-control... there's nothing inherently wrong with drugs, in and of themselves, it's the way society/the individual uses/abuses it that's the problem...

a few thoughts:

1) the crutch effect. were breeding a generation who is prone to turning to mothers little helper whever turmoil presents itself, who in turn breeds their generation of pre-weakend survivors and they tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on, (you old farts in here will get that joke)

2) we stop developing the werewithal to cope, because we dont need to. So, we dont. Which leads to the inevitable: we cant.

3) when the stores all close, your coping mechanisms will close down with them. For those of you who do not beleive this country is ripe for a good old fashioned Butt Boofing in the near future are fooling yourselves. The more we strip ourselves down as a people, the easier we are to be overthrown.

4) pharmecuticals en masse now carry a stigma of social acceptability (DANGER DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON). Personally I think ts social conditioning. Of course there are exceptions, but were not discussing exceptions, we're discussing trends. legality has little to do with it. Trends have a nasty habit of presenting themselves as truth, and then sidestepping any blame when it all takes a shit.

5) they just dont make em (people) like they used to.

thats why I hate drugs, especially pharmecuticals. because of where its leading us.

i agree with torn that drugs are overstigmatized.

and paradoxically i agree with steven that drugs are understigmatized.

*brain explodes*

ok, i'm gonna try to make sense of this after a break for asterisks.

*************

drugs are ok when they're used in controlled circumstances. the degree of control necessary changes depending on a lot of factors. using any drug every single day, regardless of its chemical properties, will encourage a habit. some drugs (cocaine, for example) are more naturally habit-forming than other drugs (weed, for example), and should be used sparingly and with caution, if at all.

i use drugs for leisure. i have MANY leisure activities that are incompatible with getting high, so my desire for and subsequent use of drugs is as infrequent as twice a month at the most. sidenote: alcohol and marijuana are in the same category for me. I had to fight some serious social conditioning to get where I am with that, but that's the nature of the beast.

i would never use mind-altering drugs every single day. i believe it's a bad decision in general, with very few exceptions, but I don't reserve the right to persecute those who do it. i think all drugs should be legal for recreational use.
