We should clear up any misconceptions on the term "babysitting"...It, contrary to popular opinion, does NOT mean you SIT on babies Msterbeau :wink

Yay BRENDA!! I need to buy u a drink when u get here!!I think I owe u one...don't i?

As much as I love Kelly, this thread is about ME!! LOL

You owe me nothing, sweetie. But I won't turn down a drink, despite the fact that I don't really "drink," per se.

We have a place like that here. It's called Gunpowder State Park. My ex, the kids, and I used to swim there a lot. But then it got all of us REALLY sick. NOT the best place to swim at all! It was fun while it lasted, though....

Well really I had an idea... speaking of beaches and all, and that there's not any decent ones.. There's a place up north if you take I 75, to holly/fenton area. It's called 7 Lakes State Park, and the beach water there is suprisingly fairly decent compared to beaches around this area. The place used to be a real blast however they've gotten really strict. No alcohol allowed... PERIOD. They lost their state funding so all they can do now is issue out fines to make ends meet, but it's still not impossible to have a good time there. I just thought I'd throw that out there since you're comming back up this way and there's been a complaint about lack of decent beaches. Maybe now that you're coming up here, if we wait a few months, we can have a welcome back party up there or something.

what do you guys think of Kensington beach? That is where I go.

Posted

Kensington is a nice area period. Soon as the warm weather comes back I will get my moutain bike out again and ride down the trails in that area. I used to live in South Lyon last year, so I was always going down the Pontiac Trail.

(I tried to link every attraction to its homepage. I truly hope this is of use to someone)

This will be a double post to allow all the images

KensingtonMetro Park obesity2.jpgsite-e.jpg

is great for picnicking, walking, the petting zoo,

but what I'm amazed no one mentioned is the fricken

Detroit Zoo is in your backyard.

That's me above cooling off with a swim.

Also, an annual membership at the Henry Ford is somewhat reasonable, considering, you get unlimited admission at the Museum (which is way cool)

mi_car.jpg

(I believe this is the car JFK got shot in)

AND

Greenfield Village.

GV is like Epcot for America. You see alll types of animals, ride around a Model T car and get to walk inside over 100 houses of significance imported from around the country.

(like where Edison perfected the lightbulb)

With seven historic districts, it's pretty good exercise walking around that big place, too.

I love that place. I put it up with the National Mall in DC as one of the best places in the country to "feel" history.

Then, there's the MUSEUM DISTRICT,

with the

African American Museum,

124_106.jpg

the Science Center

midtown-dsc-480.jpgdetroit.jpg,

the Detroit Library

main_library.jpg,

and many others. The museum district and it's zillion cultural centers is right next to Wayne State.

(Don't let the name deter you  )

My favorite one there is the Detroit Institute of Arts.

dia1.jpg The exhibits there at to die for. :drool:drool

Oh, and your local movie theatre on Main

ALWAYS has some good independent flicks.

Did I tell you I'm a bit of a cultural snob

FOOD ( I like restaurantdb.net, because you get the address for every restaurant and often a link to their web page, menu, and user reviews)

Bastone Restaurant

(in RO) has great microbrews and a good mix of food and kids eat free on Sunday!

Pronto's

a hip casual rest with all those salads with the interesting combinations, good sandwiches and stuff.

Beaches

Since I KNOW youre going to want to drive to the coast to visit Onyx, here's two places to go.

Oval Beach in Saugatuck

Saugatuck is such an awesome town. Every store is an art gallery, and the people are very friendly. It's kinda like cape cod, but more down to earth.

Oval Beach is maybe the nicest beach in MI. Sprawling, not too crowded and pristine sand, not rocks.

There's a nearby state park full of sand dunes that you can rent a dune buggy and ride across

Silver Beach in St Joseph

Voted one of top 10 family beaches in USA.

Probably because of the playgrounds on the beach and the dramatically reduced gay clientele compared to Oval Beach. Great beach!

The city is nice too, and was named most romantic in MI by a Free Press writer due to its sunsets, restaurants, and nature. (I still like Saugatuck better, but that's me)

Well, if the kids are reading my posts, I'm going to edit my one bit of crudity.

I'm so happy for you!!!!!!

:peanutbutterjellytime :peanutbutterjellytime Peanut Butter Jelly time! Peanut Butter Jelly Time! :peanutbutterjellytime :peanutbutterjellytime

As for the time posting, think of it as my housewarming gift to you since I'm stuck in Lansing.

I want you to know that although, we may not have all the culture and history the coast can provide,

Detroit still has a LOT to offer.

This was the best way I could do it. Even better than my old ten page posts.

ENJOY!

(As far as Bean, I still have no idea why she loves me so much.)

OMG! You can attend the techno fest this year! Oh you must. Take the kids even if its during the day.

Didn't they discover that one of the Macomb Cty municipalities was dumping their raw sewage into lake st clair? I know the e coli levels have been consistently high at all those beaches for the past 10 years or so...

GAWD I LOVE that "The Night-Mare" painting... who is that by, Eternal? I can never remember...

and the "African American Museum" is actually the Wright Museum of AA History... get it right! :wink

Brenda, the Science Center actually has a "Body Worlds" type exhibit going on now... not sure for how long. Skip Greenfield Village, it's amazingly lame. But maybe I just feel that way 'cos of being dragged on so many field trips as a cub.

Best all-around Detroit site for my $$- DetroitYes! Be sure to click on the Site Guide and check out the original Fabulous Ruins of Detroit tour. This incredible labor of love used to be its own site before it was incorporated into DetroitYes! The Boston-Edison tour (if it's still there) features the area I grew up in, as do parts of the Synagogues tour.
