Check The Air In Your Spare Tire!

I maintain my car pretty well but the one damn thing I forgot came up to bite me in the ass last week. I was on 96 coming home from Billy's funeral and my tire went flat. I had been meaning to get myself a full sized spare rather than that stupid little tire that comes with most cars now but hadn't gotten around to it. (Plus I hate giving up all that trunk space).

I got the tire changed in a jiffy, but it turned out the spare was underinflated and went flat and shredded within a half mile. Fortunately I was nearly home and had my phone book in my car, so $95 later for a tow and a new tire and I'm back on the road.

I'll definitely be carrying a full sized spare and checking the air in it from now on. I hate those stupid little tires - and who the hell wants to go 50 miles an hour on the freeway, especially if it's the middle of the night and no tire stores are open to get a replacement? Whoever invented those things should be run over by one of them.

The space savers work reasonably well actually provided you keep them properly inflated. Because they're smaller they require higher pressure to support the same load. You can go faster then 50 but DON'T drive on them for a lot of miles. They're there strictly to get you to a gas station. I don't blame you for wanting the proper spare though....

Here's a question for you Msterbeau...

I have a full size spare that's the same brand and dimension as my others, however...the ones on the car are sport tread and the full size spare is touring..

Shouldn't be a major problem...right?

For normal, every day driving... nope. As long as the physical dimensions aren't way off you should be fine. One thing to remember with full sized spares. It's a good idea to put them in the rotation cycle with all the other tires.

I usually don't manage to keep a set on my car for long than a year/year and a half...

That happened to my boyfriend's car. He had a full sized spare, but I guess the place where he had gotten it patched didn't do a good job because we blew one tire, got the spare on, and then that blew like 10 minutes later. The really fun part was all this happened on the day I got in an accident and totalled my car, so we had to call my cousin to come oick us up in the middle of the night.

You're wearing out a set of tires in a year and a half? How many miles? Is the wear abnormal?

No abnormal wear, alignment is fine...I just take turns a little fast sometimes. It makes me happy to an awd vehicle into a 4 wheel drift :wave

Wearing out tires because you corner hard enough to drift the car is appreciated by me and TA, dear.

Oh, worried you thought it was immature. Just wish I could have the balls to feel the beginings of traction loss on my bike...too chicken shit for that still...

Probably because it's a good way to hurt yourself, even with all the right equipment. Not that I always suggest being rational.... But you are the only parent for your daughter.

Yeeeah, I'm talking about on a track for the bike...doing that on the road with cars is just asking for a Darwinian bitch-slap to getcha. I would feel pretty safe in a set of track leathers having a low-side crash on a closed course...and I wouldn't be going for the crash outcome...I just want to see where my limits are...where exactly the bikes limits are too...I've never felt it and I fear it (the wheels loosing gription), and sometimes causes bad reactions from me on the bike when cornering. I'll forget what I've been taught...and start doing beginner shit, like target fixation...

Then there's the part of me that just wants to corner faster...teehee..

DAMMIT....I JUST WANT TO DRAG MY FREAKING KNEE!!!!
