Should Nbc Have Posted Cho's Videos?

I think that "news sources" are nothing but entertainment these days and if you want real news look at it from an outside news source (BBC, CBC, etc...) because these days it's just a big ratings grab and even the outside sources are yellow and tainted with their own viewpoints sometimes.

But hey, if a kid does grab a gun and go nuts, lets just call it Darwinisim. Joe dies because he can't run as fast as Jane or hide as well as Tom or dodge as well as bill.

I like to look at the positive aspects of things :)

hmmm. Naw.

I'd rather simply call it what it is: a (generationally) complete lack of coping skills.

You say tomoto and I say tomato

BTW the kid without the coping skills got shot in the end anyhow, further proving my (well Darwin's) theory.

1) The average person isn't going to be able to view said videos with the trained eye/mind of a psychologist. Therefore, the only real thing the average person is going to get from watching such things is shock, satisfaction of morbid curiosity, and a few moments "reality TV" entertainment. Save the repeated viewings and in-depth dissection for those who know what in hell they're doing.

2) People come out of the woodwork - after the fact - and say, "Oh, I just KNEW there was something off about that person..." But just as many say, "Wow, he was such a great guy, we never would have imagined he was capable of such acts.'

THE AVERAGE PERSON CAN NOT LOOK AT ANOTHER PERSON AND JUDGE WITH ACCURACY WHAT A PERSON IS OR IS NOT CAPABLE OF DOING. It is one of the reasons why going to the police and saying, "this guy, he's really quiet, and gives his name only as "X" and, well, just seems off" will never result in anything resembling an arrest or even an interview with said person. It's the same reason why women are blown away every other day on public streets by ex husbands and ex boyfriends, even though they've filed handfuls of protection and restraining orders against these guys - you cannot arrest a person just because they are a pain in the ass or, somehow, "off" to you.

Thus, viewing videos like Cho's isn't going to prepare ANYBODY to judge the next person they see as being worthy of suspicion or caution. It's a lame justification of satisfying your morbid curiosity because it's not preparing you one iota for "the next time." Even if you think you see a Cho in someone else, nobody you report them to can do jack shit about it. At most, maybe a school counselor will call a meeting with that person. Maybe they'll find your suspicions are totally unwarranted - and the next day, Joe Schmuck will blow away you and your co-students. And maybe they'll find your suspicions are warranted - and can't do a thing about it, and the next day, Joe Schmuck will just go to class as usual and do better than you on a test, and you'll never hear from them again until the day you die. Big lot of good watching that Cho video from start to finish did for you. <--- rolls eyes dangerously

3) Yes, it is news. So report it as such. Show a few seconds - a FEW SECONDS - of a less shocking (no guns, etc) segment of the video - with NO SOUND - and state the facts: the nutcase made a video, in which he mentioned a bunch of wacked out proof of his mental instability, and sent it to our station. END.

4) Wack jobs like this are society's "invisibles". Nobody sees them. Nobody loves them. Nobody is bothered by them. They eventually snap and do one of several things, such as kill themselves, decide things have to change and take positive, healthy steps to improve their lives, or snap and do something destructive. Cho's mind decided that the only way to improve his "nothingness" was to make a name for himself - it didn't matter if he was dead when it happened. He got what he wanted - he was seen. His voice was given notice. Instant gratification bypassing years of therapy, or reading books on self-improvement, or getting a gym membership or asking that girl who's maybe not the prettiest girl on campus for a date and finding you really like her - and she likes you after all.

I don't care that this is a dead nutjob getting what he wanted from his actions. What I DO care about are the Eric Harris's, the Dylan Klebolds, the Chos of the world sitting down in their basements with their Cheetos and lemon-lime Kool-Aid with their rabbit-ears-with-foil-tips-1975-non-remote-control-TVs seeing Cho described as an "insignificant loner" and then seeing Cho get to have his face postered all over T E L E V I S I O N and voice finally, gloriously heard by millions on TV, and looking up from the TV and seeing the locked gun cabinet under the stairs, knowing that the key is on the keyring of his sleeping-off-his-noon-drunk-dad upstairs.

<-- oozes back to her non-DGN life once again

you know, if somebody ever comes for your life and actually gets within your protective circle, you may be suprised to find that your theory (or whomevers) doesent really matter all that much.

Totally agreed. Watching Cho's videos to learn psychology is like learning about human reproduction and sexuality by watching Gonzo porn. Unfortunately: many people think both of those approaches are reasonable.

Hey, only thing keeping my ass alive are my wits, the law, and any weapons the law allows me to own. In a brawn vs. brawn fight I'd lose hands down. My other problem is I can be too trusting when I let my guard down.

The one i saw had massive disclaimers ahead of it. I have zero problem with "adults" seeing this stuff. My only concern would be with kids seeing it. I'm not up on the issue enough to know how much and when/where/how it was shown.

Part of me almost feels like more of this would be better (again assuming adult viewers) with all the meaningless shit that is on TV, people need some >REAL

If it takes some shock to get people to get off their ass and get involved and maybe try and fix some of this stuff, its worth it.
