How Could They Do This?

Scientists find mineral just like Superman's "kryptonite."

A newly-found mineral contains the same elements described in the fictional kryptonite used by the enemies of comic-book and film superhero "Superman," a scientist said Tuesday.

The white and powdery mineral at London's Natural History Museum has been named instead jadarite after the Serb region where it was found, museum mineralogist Chris Stanley said.

I don't see what the problem is, they said it had the similar chemical balances as the fictional kryptonite in the new superman movie, it sounds more like a coincidence than rewriting chemistry.

don't be hatin'. you know kryptonite actually existing and being called "kryptonite" would be way cooler than "jadarite," which is lame.

Who took the sence of humor away from chemistry? Kryptonite would have been awesome! lame chemistry boffins

I agree, they should have. A Star Trek Buff that I know claims that the USS Enterprise naval ship is named after the fictional Enterprise in Star Trek.

Even if it wasn't, that's still awesome that there's a ship called Enterprise!

ahh ok i see the point of annoyance here. I think they did this because they want to be taken "seriously" and they're afraid that naming it after a fictional element from a comic book would damage their respect for being serious. But if they wanted to try bringing this type of science into a cooler viewpoint, then yeah I agree they should have just named the stuff kryptonite

Well there have been historical ships named "Enterprise" but , Trekkies lobbied HARD to get the space shuttle named Enterprise. (and it worked) Even though their arguments were , intelligently vield around the historical refrences. (similar to cloaking relgious doctrine, by masking it as "science" for instance)

Not sure it would be so far off to have a ship which is a very small thing named so for similar reasons.

Anyhow, anything that gives people a reason to talk about science , even on such a superficial level as this , i cant help but think is a good thing.

Nasa has started to name things with more "fun" names , in the hopes that the novelty of it will help get peoples attention. (and it has)

Well, the periodic table already has Krypton. #36, It's a noble gas. As a solid it's a white crystal and can be found in our atmosphere at about 1ppm.

Fluffy news is fun.

Also, the USA has had 8 ships named Enterprise. The supercarrier USS Enterprise is the current. It was launched in 1960 and entered actual service in 61. Star Trek did not exist until years later. Also, almost all federation ships in the Star Trek universe are named after real historical ships. Hood, Constitution, Defiant and so on. The reast are named after people from the Star Trek universe.
