Does This Happen To Old People Only?

A lot of people I've worked with over the years seem to gravitate to country music as they've gotten older. I can't understand how they have gone from Hendrix or Deep Purple in their youth to well, country top 40.

I always think to myself, fuck that - country is to my ears void of anything worthy of the instruments used to create the junk with. It seems (to me anyway) that it is mostly people in their 40's and older. Is this a requirement for the aging process?

My taste in music (I feel so anyway) still retains it's edge. I still really enjoy music with anger and a real fuck off attitude.

Maybe it's just me but I refuse to give in and start playing that twangy stuff.

i have noticed the same thing.

i had a friend (my age) years ago start to turn towards country. she used to be very much so into THIS scene and other cool music then one day i catch her listening to country. she got turned on to it by her mother and her boyfriend at the time.

after i made fun of her she tried to deny her new found love of the music. i then said to her if you really love it, why are you trying to hide it? she should have just told me to fuck off. that is what i would do. :p

maybe i think it sucks and can't believe my punk rock goth loving friend has something twangy coming from the radio instead, but she should not care what anyone thinks if she really likes it.

my mother is another one. i grew up listening to classic rock. she always had on 94.7. then one day she gets re-married and her husband likes classic rock but also country. i catch her having that on in her car instead of 94.7. i wondered, what is WRONG with her??? fine like country but don't give up the good stuff you used to like and grew up on and had me grow up on too.

i think it is great to find an interest in new music, something you may have not exposed yourself to before but why give up what you used to love and just listen to one thing?? especially country of all things??

country is not one of my favorites. aside from a select few songs i can't listen to it at all. i don't hold it against anyone if that is what they like but how can you only like ONE thing? i could never just listen to one type of music. i really like way too much.

one thing is for certain- i will NOT turn 40 and start listening to garth brooks. maybe my tastes will change to add in other things but i will never give up what i have always loved no matter how loud or heavy it is.

I always stayed away from Country music......

I vowed I would never to.

I can't help it, theres just so many great Country Artists!!

Johnny Cash

Kitty Wells

Dolly Parton

Willie Nelson

SOME Garth Brooks...I hate Garth Brooks dammit, but there is a few songs I can't resist!

Hank Williams 1, 2, 3

Stevie Ray Vaughan

just to name a few......

PLUS...there are a lot of songs I just relate to....personally.

It just clicks with me....

I like a little country-ish music now and then. A few of the older legends and a little "alt" country. I appreciate some of the musicianship and I love voices like Patsy Cline - beautiful but rich and deep. I also appreciate the honesty and experiences that Johnny Cash sings about.

Modern/popular country? Ack!!

See my post in the music snob thread dor more on my general attitude towards music.

Back to the question... I don't think in my case it has anything to do with age. I've had a soft spot for it for many years now. Perhaps with age you grow to appreciate those things you didn't care for earlier in life?

I am unaware of anyone in my "old people" close sphere of influence that gives country music much of a serious listen... other than me. I guess im in the "old people" group? (Age 32?)

They may be secretly listening to it though and just hiding for fear of the social ostracism.

I still listen to all my other stuff, just what "my music" is has gotten broader and broader over time.

Kellygrrrl, I'm listening to Jolene right now.

I think alot of people go back to what they know. I remember my parents listening to old country in our living room, so when I hear it, it takes me back. Maybe people like to reminisce is all. And I didn't like it then, because I can't like anything my parents like (of course) but then I heard it again when I was older and I gave it a chance for real, and I liked it.

I just finished making a new mixed CD, with Hank Williams followed by Joy Division. That's some good shit.

Nothing wrong with old country/western,bluegrass,hillbilly,western swing, roots music, or American music in general.

I think its the beer. I really do. And I hate it too. I know the most rockin old metal head and even he is changing and I don't visit much now for fear he will turn on the country. I am not being picky. It triggers my narcalepsy.

I'm old. I don't care for most country music. It makes me want to tear off my ears and run away screaming.

I grew up with country music in the heart of Tennessee. I hated most of it except Johnny Cash, but I consider him a genre outside of any other music. I do like some bluegrass, the real stuff back from the 1930s.

Mainstream top 40 country is icky to me.

If I start listening to who's cheatin who and drinkin' and fightin' and honkytonky music, just go ahead and shoot me because that means I've truly lost my mind.
