Student Arrested For Making Videogame Map Of School

A student at the Houston-area Clements High School was arrested, sent to an "Alternative Education Center" and banned from graduation after school officials found he created a video game map of his school. School district police arrested the teen and searched his home where they confiscated a hammer as a 'potential weapon'. ' "They decided he was a terroristic threat," said one source close to the district's investigation.' With an upcoming May 12 school board election, this issue has quickly become political, with school board members involved in the appeal accusing each other of pandering to the Chinese community in an attempt to gain votes.

heh, these "kids threatening their schools in a post (vatechshootings/9/11/columbine/oklahomacitybombing/fuckin'a-mansonmurders) world" news feeds are just getting more and more ridiculous.

Is someone googling: student + arrested + stupid once a day or something?

I give up.

Hysteria. Kinda like the Salem Witch trials.

Oh dear god! I created a map of my high school for Castle Wolfenstein back in the day. Does that mean I'm a terrorist threat too?

OMG, HE'S GOT A HAMMER, HE'S GOINA BUILD SOMETHING!

Seriously I've contemplated making video game maps of my school, I was just always too lazy. I've had the same thought about the clubs I go to. Why? Because it would be fun to virtually move around in it.

what geek hasn't had that fantasy, even if very few of us make it reality?

Better to do it in cyber world than real world. Take away our release and then we have no other choice but to do it for real. Not that I would, I'm just saying.

In the comments section it said that the map was used for a game where you kill people at the school. The police overreacted but it's probably not cool to know the kid in your class is making replicas of your school for videogames in which you kill people in said school.....if the comments were correct. The hammer as a weapon is just ridiculous though, which is why all charges were dropped.

what fantasy? killing people at school? If that is what you mean, I am in the minority I guess because I liked high school and never thought about killing anyone.

in the comments section? you have got to be kidding. of course the comments aren't "correct," they're the conjecture of some asshole who has no information other than what they just read in the article

the fantasy of turning your high school, home, favorite club, place of employment, etc, into a virtual 3d environment. like scary guy said in the post immediately before mine.

I actually loved high school myself as well and never wanted to kill anyone there. But if nazis ever attacked I so would've toasted them. I hid all the powerups in Mech Room 100. Big Blue Guy would come out of the principal's office with his "guten tag" and chain guns, I would've just ran to the cache of ammo in the band room. Of course I'd have to take out a couple of those brown guys to get there though. And some dogs in the choir room. Those damn german shepards.

now that is just wicked cool

This concept is nothing new or origional... though I doubt the layout to this was made from an actual school, but when are they going to hammer down on newgrounds.com for this game?

According to the news report on ABC, the comments were correct, the videogame was a violent one where you kill people in the school. I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that it was just conjecture????? It was for a game called counterstrike.

Counter-Strike has nothing to do with school shootings. It's a popular online Terrorist vs. Counter Terrorist mod of the Half Life engines (Half Life is another game). Mods aren't necessarily maps, which is another great example of the media's stupidity towards anything it's mindless occupants can't grasp. There are no official maps released by Valve (the company who makes both games) that have anything to do with High School settings. There are no models official or unofficial I know of, of young or teenage gunmen.

I used to create maps for Counter Strike: Condition Zero and I was in an awesome clan. Creating maps takes understanding the world builder, brushes, sprites, textures, compiling errors, (modeling if your so inclined), polygon counts are vital, skies, layout, ect. I have thought of mapping out my school, but the texture work would be insane; I've also thought about mapping out plenty of other places, it's a game about counter terrorism, realism in maps help immersion.

World building is time consuming and frustrating, but the privilege behind it is you've created a virtual environment that other people can play. The idea that someone mapped out a school so they could train themselves to kill people is idiotic, if your going to go off on killing spree you'd have to be an idiot to just train for it through video games; CS is a game where the only 'people' in maps other than players are models of middle aged men in prison or doctor suits as hostages, not much 'High School' about that.

Myself, and many people I know keep knives, or whatever else that could be considered lethal; some people collect stuff like that, some people might be inclined to have it for protection. That doesn't make someone a 'terroristic threat', that makes them a smart person. The media loves to remind everyone that the world ain't crime free, then the media and law enforcement gets bent out of shape for people in possession of potential weapons.. complete stupidity at it's best, from behind a badge or a microphone.

:wink
