Does anyone listen to the newer (1990's to present) goth and dark wave music? I see a lot of people who are into the older music.

Dunno.....maybe if you post some? Thanks if you do. I would appreciate it.

I think I do. I like Cruxshadows, VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, BlutEngel, L'Ame Immortelle, Funker Vogt, Clan of Xymox, Emilie Autumn, Icon of Coil ...

I have no idea what style of music that is or what era it's from, but I like it.

I like alllll kinds of stuff, pretty much a song here and there from every genre except top40 country.

What are you new? Seems these days that people can't get into the old stuff enough anymore. It's rare to hear something pree 1990 at a club these days (hell try pree 2000's).

I'd say 90+% of your average "goth listeners" listen to primarily 90s and newer "goth music". Older stuff is actually fairly rare on most peoples wish lists.

Even people that are aware of the older stuff, and may even be into it, don't listen to it all that often. For the more hardcore "old" people , they've heard it already 9,000 times , and for the younger "hardcore" folk they just usually prefer newer stuff.

Obviously this isn't true for everyone, but its an age-old thing. The newer stuff is fresher in peoples minds, gets more hype , etc. Also newer stuff is far more prolific (meaning there is just more of it available in sheer volume)

I'll just name off some that I listen to.

Collide

Lacuna Coil

Unto Ashes

Chiasm

Theatre of Tragedy (Their first couple releases.)

Mephisto Walz

Basically anything off the Projekt label.

And many more.

The only old school music I like is Siouxsie and the Banshees. She rules. Anything else I can't really get into.

The older stuff typically is an acquired taste for most unless you "grew up" on it. The typical sound these days is very processed, which the old stuff isn't. For many you really have to force yourself to listen to it over and over again until your brain gets trained to it.

Joy Division / The Cure for example are very good. But, if your ear isn't trained to like that kind of sound, it will probably be boring. The "new wave" rock/punk influenced sound just isn't in vogue these days. Same for a vast swath of the olden days stuff.

Also i think there might be something psychological at work that just makes the four-on-the-floor processed beat or to the other extreme..."ethereal" ghostly nursery rhyme sound that the modern stuff tends toward that makes it easier to like.

I myself tend toward the newer stuff so im not trying to put it down, just pointing out that new stuff is definetly preferred by the masses, and doesn't require people to acquire a taste for it like the older does.

The current stuff? It's now called deathrock - goth without the bullshit. Also used for old school pre-Sisters goth.

Also ya got dark cabaret and dark/neo folk. Lotta stuff that goes unnoticed by your average Shitty Cubber.

I've always been a pure metal head, though my tastes in music have broadened lately, i still prefer to thrash to Chimaira and other bands of a heavy thrashy feel to them. Lacuna Coil is damn good, I've got such a thing for their lead singer. Other than that, I can't ever ever ever get enough Pink Floyd or Led Zeplin lately.

The last 'newer' goth band I listened to was probably Type O Negative.. but I've overplayed just about everything by them now..

Ethereal, yes that was the word I was looking for. Excellent hypnotizing music. I also prefer female singers when it comes to the goth genre of music.

Female vocals are indeed awesome... I would recommend Love Spirals Downward (now only known as Love Spirals) if you like the trance gothic female stuff... It is very mezmerizing.

Also Mirranda Sex Garden.... OMG powerful powerful stuff... has a very haunting folk edge to it... female vocals, string instruments... as well as some rock elements... WOW

Sky Cries Mary is another powerful band for these reasons....

Let me know what you think :)

Mirranda Sex garden is REALLY REALLY good stuff. "Cut" is one of my fav female vocal tracks ever me thinks. The percussion and the ethereal vocals with the piano and strings... just freakin excellent

I really like a lot of those current/recent indie label darkwave/deathrock bands like: The Phantom Limbs, Sixteens, Black Ice, Dog Shit Taco, Abiku, The Vanishing, The Lost Sounds, etc. Some of that stuff is dripping with the Siouxsie influence and is definitely easy on the ears for that reason.

Nice! Another newer band influenced by the early stuff is The Flir.

I pretty much like everything mentioned here. I hold no prejudice to any of the genres that ended up in the goth scene aside from Industrial which I can't get into.

I like the early stuff like Siouxsie, , Bauhaus, The March Violets, Clan of Xymox, Lowlife, The Chameleons.....

80's postpunk such as Psychedelic Furs, New Order, J+M Chain, Wire.....

80's 4ad such as Cocteau Twins, Wolfgang Press, This Mortal Coil.....

Dark synthpop such as Depeche Mode, Wolfsheim, De/Vision, The Nine, Red Flag, Mesh......

90's Projekt stuff like Love Spirals (Downward), Lycia

EBM/Futurepop such as VNV Nation, Apop, Covenant

Whether you want to call this stuff goth, or new or not is up to you, but I'm going to put my 2c in for a few bands. My Dying Bride, Johnny Hollow, and Goldfrapps "Felt Mountain" have been doing funny things to me. I like them a lot.

I will have to go give them a look see. See if I can find any samples before I go to Amazon.com and buy. The CD stores around here suck and wouldn't have them.

My Dying Bride kicks ass. I have just about all of their full length CDs but one and a few EPs.

Yeah I'm a youngin but I still try to revisit music much older than I stuff like old Frontline Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Front 242, etc. But I love newer music like Combichrist, And One, Panzer AG, KMFDM, Ayria, etcetera so on and so forth. I don't feel like just sitting and listing them all, but you get the picture.

KMFDM came about in around 85, and And One has been around since the early 90's, just FYI.
