Fierce Critter Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 3.06Ghz Intel Celeron D Processor socket775 with heatsink Gigabyte GA-81865GME-775-RH Motherboard A guy on one of my yahoo buy/sell/trade groups is selling these together for $60. We picked up a fabulous alienware tower at a yard sale today, and have been talking about building our own system this year. I know nothing about these things. So get back to me, you hardware geniuses - is $60 a good deal, and are those good for my purposes? I'm running a basic emachines right now with a 2800+ AMD Athlon XP processor. I mostly use the computer for music (Qbase), graphics on CS2, Online gaming (right now, only Second Life). Thanks, you madmen of mechanology.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Took me awhile as i had to re-learn a lot of the olden days processor nomenclature and every year they get more and more annoying with their naming conventions and even though i think its an upgrade for you, but not by a whole huge margin. Its more about the ram I'd guess. Basically that price looks on par with what im seeing around, granted you don't list Ram or some of the other details but basically that process or + a decent old school motherboard seems around 60 bucks although i think that motherboard is a bit better than the usual el-cheapos you find bundled with budget stuff. I wouldn't split hairs to much on that older stuff like that as by the time you get it to your house the price will probably have dropped by another 10%. That case probably will be worth the same as all the components inside if its a newer alienware case with some of the frills. Is it a second computer or basically a re-arrangement of hardware with a new processor/motherboard? Is this more "for fun" or actually necessity of your current system not cutting it for what you use it for? If its for fun, i'd say go for it no question but don't expect any gigantic performance increase. Here is a relative (take it with a grain of salt) performance chart of a slew of AMD / Intel processors: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?mod...5&chart=188
Fierce Critter Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Thank you, Troy. I had decided against, as I did a little research myself and came to the same conclusion you did. I'm going to be building my own system, piece by piece. I have a new graphics card installed on the eMachine that will be moved over to the new system. But I don't have anything else yet, except the lucky find of that case at the yard sale.
