Dubh Aingeal Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 The BBC reports on a proposal to use RFID and wi-fi to track students wherever they go on campus: 'Battery-powered RFID tags are placed on an asset and they communicate with at least three wireless access points inside the network to triangulate a location.' At The Wireless Event in London, 'Marcus Birkl, head of wireless at Siemens, said location tracking of assets or people was one of the biggest incentives for companies, hospitals and education institutions to roll out wi-fi networks.' The article points out that integration of RFID and wi-fi raises the possibility that RFID can be used for remote surveillance.
Scary Guy Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 A chip in the licence, an implant in your ass, whatever. I can understand chipping a device like a notebook or something like that but anything else is just an invasion of privacy to me.
Head Wreck Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 indeed. why do they need to track students i dont know. i can understand it if it were a secure research or information facility. but jeez. seems as if we have another 4 years of "new labour" we wont be able to step out the front door without commiting some offence and getting fined for it
Gauge Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 this is all just getting rediculous, in h.s. they had cameras EVERYWHERE, metal detectors when you walk in, security guards, you werent allowed to leave campus unless you were a senior going to votech and even then you had to get weekly updated permision slips from your parents (or you could do it if you were 18) and had to pass through security to get out where you were checked and phoned into the office. If you were a morning votecher and came in half way through the day you were checked in and bags searched. . .all kinds of fucked up shit
