Just popped up, I can't see this as being a good thing for the 56k'ers

But I'm on cable so screw them :D

it pissed me off when it first started happening last night, but it doesn't bother me if it's situated below the forums. it's kinda cool.

it's cool but some of it might not be work friendly ;) i guess it doesn't matter as long as you don't scroll down all the way

If your concerned about big brother at work, you want to stay off pretty much all message boards unless they are 100% pre-approved posts only. Mods can only be reactive, not proactive when it comes to message board content. Posters can post whatever they want, and you might unexpectedly click on it. Message boards are among the most work unfriendly websites there are. Its just the nature of fast-paced user created content, unfortunately.

Having said that the whole time i was at Ford and then before that Wayne County and before that Owens Corning, i was a massive message board addict.

In terms of the DGN gallery there should be zero pictures that aren't PG13 showing up in the picture gallery. If there is they need to be removed. Generally DGN isn't "work friendly" per-se, but its at least "work tolerant". If more people used the "work friendly" skin i'd probably try and work something out so that might scrub the board a bit cleaner, but as it is only 1 user uses it regularly as far as i can tell.

The thumbnails are only about 3.5k each which isnt much. The upside is that they help with the hardest thing on any website, that is to create return-users of them that would otherwise be "bounced" that is, visit once and never come back. Some people have no interest in actually posting on or reading a message board, but they do like to look at pictures. Eventually , that mindset may (and has) changed after long term lurking.

According to the stats less than 5% of users have dial up, but even so , its only 1 page and dial up users are used to slow-ish pages. Typically this sort of content is the kind of thing that the "silent majority" likes. Its born out by tons of search engine searches. The top searches that bring people to DGN usually center around "pictures" keywords, but then they bounce away. I actually would prefer (for new user reasons) to have the pictures right at the top, but its sort of a compromise between the people that like pictures there, and the people that don't to put them at the bottom.

These types of folk are the kind that lurk and lurk and hopefully turn into posters at some point. If they didn't lurk at all, there's virtually zero chance they'd ever turn into posters. This kind of stuff gets into "whats best for the long term success of the board" vs "what i personally like". (which is rarely one in the same) What you might or might not like isn't the issue so much as what is going to bring us the most new users and/or keep the lurkers coming back who might turn into users. We aren't going to have a mass exodus of existing users because of 30k of thumbnails buried at the bottom of one page of the board.

K, the gallery went away, any news on why?

Update to some of the files where the custom mod stuff was, killed a ton of small mods all over the board. Every time there is an update it usually kills any mods, and i slowly have to re-add them.

You'll notice the "my pictures" link under everyones profile is gone, along with the "daily posts" stat. (and some other more minor stuff)

I've actually been working on the 'tech' of the board like a slave for the last two days. Luckily most of the stuff i work on isnt apparent to the average joe poster.

Also there are some issues with the domain names... which is another story.

Yeah, no kidding!! Troy, you do so much for us and everyone on DGN...and yet, you never complain.(Well except when you're forced to be on the phone for as long as you've been...which ANYONE would bitch about that.)

So, I'm going along with Msterbeau here, and thanking you!!
