Fbi Oversteps Its Bounds

There is a Washington Post article about an eyebrow raising internal FBI audit recently released to the public. The document finds that, contrary to a document release back in March, the FBI frequently overstepped its bounds in collecting data on US citizens. The article states that the organization may have violated laws or agency rules 'more than 1,000 times'.

The new audit covers just 10 percent of the bureau's national security investigations since 2002. The vast majority of the new violations were instances in which telephone companies and Internet providers gave agents phone and e-mail records the agents did not request and were not authorized to collect. But two dozen of the newly-discovered violations involved agents' requests for information that U.S. law did not allow them to have.

Thats why you shouldn't write or look at anything on your computer that you don't want people to know about. At least thats what I think.

And I don't like my friends using my computer these days cause I don't know what they are up to.

I am paraniod but its a HEALTHY paranoia......one that keeps my out of trouble. For the most part.

This is over the internet, you're not safe even then.

Even if you encrypt transmissions they have supercomputers to overcome that.

The problem here is that they did things they were not supposed to do. We don't have a "right to total privacy" regardless of were it stored they can get it if they really have a need for it.

I'm glad some agencies are still doing this kind of reporting. Its less and less common , as it costs a lot more money to do actual investigative reporting , rather than just prop up two people and letting them shout at each other.

A judge has ordered the FBI to release agency records about its abuse of National Security Letters (NSLs) to collect Americans' personal information. The ruling came just a day after the EFF urged the judge to immediately respond in its lawsuit over agency delays.
