Homicidalheathen Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 There is a little slice of yellow moon and what I believe is a planet shinning next to it in the western sky right now
Dubh Aingeal Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Looks like a star to me, but since I already packed up my telescope I can't say for certain. Then again I could be wrong. Space.com: OBSERVING HIGHLIGHTSMoon: This month, the Moon passes close to Jupiter, Venus, M44 and the Pleiades star cluster.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I thought that was Venus, but i was wrong. Um.. god I know this....
torn asunder Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I thought that was Venus, but i was wrong. Um.. god I know this.... if it was "uranus", you'd know it!!
LadyKay Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 There is a little slice of yellow moon and what I believe is a planet shinning next to it in the western sky right now Yes I saw that. Lovely...very lovely!
Homicidalheathen Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 gonna get a telescope someday..but these damn city lights....
Destroit Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I believe it's Venus, it's highly visible almost all the time. In the early morning over the horizon (and I mean EARLY morning) you can almost always see Mercury right next to the sun (since it never strays far from the sun obviously). I'd love it if it was Uranus, but it's not visible to the naked eye. Saturn, however, is in full effect right now, so to speak, it's orbiting maybe 30 - 45 degrees from the horizon in the east I believe, and if you have telescope you can see its rings very visibly because they're literally facing us. Anyone have a telescope? I don't :( . If you want a real treat, mid-August I believe, is supposed to be one of the most visible meteor showers this year, I believe something like 50 - 100 visible an hour (if you live out in the boondocks) however, some will be visible from where we live. If you guys want I can find the date. There's another one that is more intense in November, but usually it's cloudy that time of year and you most likely won't see a whole lot. If it's not though, that one should be spectacular as well. I remember coming in drunk one night from CC and my astronomy teacher had told us that there was to be a meteor shower all weekend, and I personally have never seen a "shooting star" like that, and I looked up and saw two zip across the sky. At the time I thought I had way too many strong islands and was starting to see shit, but when I woke up in the morning I realized what I had seen. Very cool indeed.
Homicidalheathen Posted June 20, 2007 Author Posted June 20, 2007 I have seen lots of shooting stars and 3 northern lights happenings. The thing is to be out at night.....at various different times often...from I'd say 9pm to 6am.
Sybil Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I thought that was Venus, but i was wrong. Um.. god I know this.... i thought Venus, too..

By forcing myself into that habit it kept me going outside to look at the stars.
