Black Hole Paradox Solution Proposed

Physicists from Case Western Reserve University claim to have cracked the black hole information loss paradox that has puzzled physicists for the past 40 years.

The physicists are quick to assure astronomers and astrophysicists that what is observed in gravity pulling masses together still holds true, but what is controversial about the new finding is that 'from an external viewer's point it takes an infinite amount of time to form an event horizon and that the clock for the objects falling into the black hole appears to slow down to zero,' said Krauss, director of Case's Center for Education and Research in Cosmology.

this is new!?!?

Could somebody get these guys working on teleportation please? I'd like to be able to visit Detroit without the six hour drive.

Yeah this is new. The concept of an event horizon and objects entering a black hole seeming to freeze in time due to the light being sucked in, and thus not being able to get back to your eyes at a certain point isn't new. At first glance that seems to be all thats being described here so its like W..T...F? To people that actually have a basic grasp of black holes.

The "takes an infinite amount of time to form" part there is pretty half-assed explanation of what they are actually talking about here. Hawking & friends pointed out a (difficult to grasp and very technical) reason why black holes cant exist in the traditionally explained way and basically either we need to solve this problem, or black holes just dont exist in the 70s. No real good explanation has really been offered. So black holes don't exist right? No, assume they do based on overwhelming amounts of other circumstantial evidence/theories. This (technical as hell) story here is an attempt to explain away the problem that hawking and friends observed/theorized about back in the day.

For the average Joe all this equates out to is "they figured out a possible explanation for one of the unexplained problems that black holes present". Its a bit too subtle / technical to really understand without a few hours or more of reading.

I second that! I'd like a portal right outside the club please so I don't have to worry about my car. :)
