Tipping Stylists

When your stylist is the owner of the salon itself, do you feel it's necessary to tip them?

I tip non-owner stylists generously, as I know how often they don't get a very large cut of the actual fee I'm paying.

But isn't it redundant to tip if the person doing the work is the shop owner herself?

I have been up until now. But my stylist owns her own little neighborhood shop. I'm going to drop in to the salon soon and wonder if I shouldn't bother with the extra $$.

I've been in the industry fo over 22 years, and I feel that you should tip them. Most owners don't make as much profit as you might think. It's expensive to run a salon.

I would probably be miffed if I was getting the impression that people weren't tipping me just because I owned the salon. I'd imagine it's a lot to run and any extra money would be greatly appreciated. Plus, tips are the traditional way to let your stylist know (s)he's done a great job, and not tipping might be seen as a sign of dissatisfaction, regardless if it's actually meant that way.

Me, I just go to a beauty school and let the students chop away at my hair for a paltry $15, and tips are not allowed there! I feel weird spending lots of money on a haircut.

Car designers are stylists. Where's my tip, dammit!!!

If she is still doing the actual work then yes, I mean it would be an insult to NOT tip her. Whatever profits ya know, allot is going to the cost of maintaining the place.

Yes, do tip!

I used to work in a salon and was friends with the owner. Her stylists often took home more profit than she did. It takes a lot to keep a business running and sometimes it doesn't even turn a good profit for years.

Then I shall keep tipping as per usual. :)

I'm actually in the midst right now. She did the cutting, and I had to run home to do a mower sale. I'm running back there for styling as soon as the deal is done (this place is about 3 blocks from me).

Zoinks. She cut it waaaaay shorter than I wanted, but I am TOTALLY GEEKED about the styling. I had all the perm cut out, and my below-the-shoulders, ratty one-length has been transformed into a multi-dimensional actual STYLE.

Not so short that I'll cry - as I've been known to do when stylists cut it too short - but I will like it better when it grows out a few inches.

I need to buy a new blow dryer....

OMG.

She did such a FANTASTIC job.

And charged me less than I expected. So I tipped probably higher than I've ever tipped before.

I love this woman.

Hooray for fantastic haircuts!

I feel it's generally a great show of appreciation to tip your stylist, owner or otherwise, ESPECIALLY if they own a tiny neighborhood place.

However... I worked for a major-money-day-spa for a while in Anchorage, and those ladies made money hand over fucking fist. They were constantly going on vacation, and they each had three cars. It was seriously out of hand.

Ordinarily, stylists look at my particularly thin hair as troublesome, "it's so hard to work with, a real challenge." And they never seem to know what to do with it except to keep telling me I will always need to perm it for any kind of body. And when they do perm it, they leave it on forever, and as a result, my hair is absolutely destroyed to the point where I have to load it up with product to tame the frizz.

Not only did she say I didn't need a perm, she said if she did perm my hair, she'd use a formula for color-treated hair and maybe leave it on for 3 minutes, strictly for body. First time anybody has ever suggested a novel idea like that.

And I absolutely love how she referred to my hair not as "thin and troublesome" but "fine and delicate".

I love this woman.

I thought Jon might be upset when he saw me, as he was looking forward to it growing ever longer and "romantic'. She did cut it much shorter than I wanted, but I didn't and won't complain because the style is just so great that it makes up for it. It'll be great when it grows out a few months.

But Jon was just delighted. He's never reacted this positively to a haircut on me ever before.

Now off to the store for a brand-new hair dryer & brush. :D
