Woman killed in fireworks accident

Melvindale Police said a woman was killed Monday night in a fireworks accident.

Few details were available, but police said the incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the parking lot of a car wash at Dix and Outer Drive.

No one else was injured.

Police were still on the scene as of 11 p.m., investigating the death.

Danialle Barse, 27, died shortly after 10 p.m. when struck in the head by a large commercial firework explosive, fired from a 3-inch-wide mortar in the parking lot of the Outer Drive car wash where she worked.

Barse, who grew up in Melvindale and lived in Taylor, was the mother of three, including twin 2-year-old sons. Her 8-year-old son witnessed Monday's mishap, police said.

The commercial firework device was a box of 25, 3-inch-mortars, designed to go off in sequence as a multi-aerial bomb finale-type of display, said Melvindale Police Lt. Chad Hayse.

"Somebody lit it and it didn't go off immediately. She looked over the top of it and it went off," Hayse said.

Commercial grade fireworks are exactly that. They reguire an ATF liscence to obtain. Buy selling and using them without following the ATF's rules is a major federal crime.

Do not confuse m-80's, large aerials and shells used py pyrotechnicians with what we buy at the local store/stand or tent.

The ones we buy are consumer grade fireworks,(including roman candles, reloadable shell, and multi shot aerial devices) and are toned down for our safety.

Also, light fuse and get away, never handle, or look into a device that fails to light.

I love aerial fireworks, but this woman obviously was not schooled in the safe way to have a fireworks display. Whoever allowed those consumer grade devices to come int her hands in guilty of manslaughter.

Legalize, regulate, and tax fireworks.

Yeah... blowing your face up infront of your kids sucks. Hopefully they will learn from their mothers mistake.

that 3" mortar shell was definately not a toy (many times larger than the mytical M-80s). Those shells have a charge that boosts them up a few hundred feet and then a burster charge that breaks them open and spreads burning gunpowder and various phosphors to make pretty colors. Having that all in your face is not good.

These things have become quite common over the last few years either by people going to indiana and buying them, the internet, or people illegaly importing and selling them.

The largest I have seen in michigan was a 6" shell. These are as large as civil war cannon balls and are seriously dangerous. The 6" shells are the ones used for the detroit river shows... yet people buy them (and then have to try and find a length of 6" pipe to shoot them.

Also too bad she had to die in that way. Things like this get the fireworks I like. Eventually we'll be down to nothing but snakes and sparklers.

I'd say I feel bad, and yeah I feel bad for her kids and family, but WHAT DUMBASS LOOKS INTO A FIREWORK THAT DIDN'T LIGHT?! I mean seriously. Even those shitty little fountains you get around here, when I light one and it doesn't go off, I still run up and splash water on it and say "oh well, that's that." Your face is not worth some pretty sparks that fly up in the sky IMO.
