Dubh Aingeal Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 A possible vaccine against HIV is nearing readiness for clinical trials. The compound could provide a 'double whammy' by not only inoculating the patient against future infection, but destroying an HIV infection in progress. The vaccine is an artificial virus-like particle whose outer casing consists of the TBI (T- and B cell epitopes containing immunogen) protein constructed by the researchers combined with the polyglucin protein. This protein contains nine components stimulating different cells of the immune system: both the ones that produce antibodies and the ones that devour the newcomer.
Reaper Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 In the long run, I wonder how they would take care of the African nations. Surely its more than they could help.

Onyx Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Here's hoping it works and if it does, gets into use quickly. Prevention is way less expensive too, than drugs aimed toward maintaining someone who has an already weakened immune system. Very interesting how it could both protect and also treat an existing infection.
Kit Kat P Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 There is current research into a complete prevention based the fact that direct descendants of those that survived the black plague can actually carry several strains of HIV and never contract AIDs, they are immune (excuse the pun).
jadnifer Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Glad to hear it! It will help out a lot of people! Its a very scary thing.
Shade Everdark Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I'll reserve my excitement until they find a vaccination against stupid. PS for serious: this is good news. I hope it works out.
Destroit Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 FINALLY! I've been one of those people that have been paying attention to all the HIV/AIDS business since I was a little kid, like overly obsessed with it actually 'cause it's such a scary thing. I was MASSIVELY obsessed with it when it came to my first boyfriend, when I found out he was skanky and a cheating whore, and was worried about it for years after until I finally got up the courage to go and get tested. I read about this, maybe about 6 months ago in the news, but at that point they weren't starting the clinical trials it only looked "hopeful". I'm so glad to hear it, I figured they may have figured out the virus sometime in my life, but with it being so complicated and its ability to mutate, it's very difficult as a researcher/scientist to come up with anything feasable as a cure. I'm not even at risk for HIV 'cause I"m monogamous with Raven and we are of the non-swinging, non-cheating assortment, but for other people who are high risk I feel happy for them. I'm glad they finally caught it, now they need to get rid of cancer. They're working on an Alzheimer's vac too, and as a little kid I told my mom that I could die of anything and wouldn't care, but I didn't want to die from AIDS or Alzheimer's. : I guess the world health is looking up (until bird flu hits at least).

Homicidalheathen Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 I hope it comes out and is researched a ton before thing 2 becomes a nurse. I know someone who was pricked by an hiv tainted needle......they had just given some junky homeless nut a shot and he swung and somehow she got pricked...... They washed and squeezed it out for like 15 min with alcohol and iodine and she did not get it but still..... Just another example of how an innocent gets it.
Marblez Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Actually, I did a search on a .gov website and found that there are 19 current trials in progress for HIV prevention vaccines. From what I have been able to find, things definitely look promising. Look it up, you might be as suprised as I was.
ZhukovCodeslinger Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Curing/preventing Aids would do little or nothing to help Africa. Without addressing the rest of Africa's problems, preventing lots of deaths would only shrink the available resources that the general population is already killing eachother over.
Dollardave Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 This would be a remarkable breakthrough if it works. I had my hiv test in december and didn't have sex for a year and a half until I started seeing my girl. I felt like a virgin doing it with her cuz it had been so long I thought I was gonna be terrible at it but amazing I held off from cuming for a while. My girls had her test too and shes clean. I would like to see this vaccine get rolling fast. Someone brought up africa I feel really bad for those children especially over there mother theresa used to go comfort them shes passed on tho God rest her soul she was a saint for sure.
