Napster Wars

Cory Doctorow has an interesting article over at Information Week about Hollywood's strategy of suing sites such as YouTube.

Says Doctorow:

It's been eight years since Sean Fanning created Napster in his college dorm room. Eight years later, there isn't a single authorized music service that can compete with the original Napster. Record sales are down every year, and digital music sales aren't filling in the crater. The record industry has contracted to four companies, and it may soon be three if EMI can get regulatory permission to put itself on the block. The sue-'em-all-and-let-God-sort-'em-out plan was a flop in the box office, a flop in home video, and a flop overseas. So why is Hollywood shooting a remake?

It will always be an ongoing battle of those who want music and movies for free, and those who want money for their polished pieces of shit...

I've said it before... If the fucking artists wouldn't overcharge an album with only 8 songs, 5-6 of which are shitty anyway... they might make more sales for one..

and for two... I never buy shit that I haven't heard before unless it's Chimaira, then I just know it's gonna be good, but for anything else, I must try it out before I buy it. And god forbid this state would ever have a radio station that plays the shit I listen to. So without my napster, kazaa, or limewire... I don't buy as many CD's.

Can't you hear at least 30 seconds of any song on most legal sites??

Is it Best Buy or FYE (or both) that lets you listen to any song on any album in it's entirety before purchasing it??

(My personal impression is that you just like to get your shit for free and as long as you can do that you will fight for the "right" to do it legally)

I don't care about the last/first portion. I want the whole song, not some cheap demo. there's plenty of songs out there that are cool for the first few seconds then just turn into utter shit for the remaining 2 minutes.
