Police: Slain Greektown casino manager was target

CLINTON TOWNSHIP -- A casino manager was targeted for murder, police said today, and investigators are looking into whether his job was connected to the killing.

Richard Harrison Loury, a 50-year-old supervisor at the Greektown Casino, was fatally shot twice Wednesday night as he returned to his Clinton Township apartment complex after dropping his daughter off at his ex-wife's house.

"This definitely doesn't appear to be random," Clinton Township Lt. Mark Rybinski said. "He was a target. Someone either followed him there, or waited for him. Right now, we don't know if his job at the casino had anything to do with this, but it's something we're looking into."

Wednesday was Loury's day off, although he did go to the casino for a meeting, Rybinski said. "Then he went to his mom's house, and his fiance later met them there. She brought (Loury's) daughter to his mom's house."

Loury left his mother's house about 9 p.m. to drop his daughter off at his ex-wife's house. Loury's fiance, who drove a separate car, went to pick up dinner. At about 10:15 p.m., when she returned to the Harbors Apartments complex where they lived, she found him dead outside his apartment.

"It's probably fortunate that the fiance stopped to get dinner," Rybinski said. "Otherwise, who knows what might have happened to her."

Loury was shot once in the back, and once in the head, Rybinski said. "The shots were from at least 4 or 5 feet away," he said. "After he was shot in the back, he either turned around or got turned around, because the second shot was to the front of the head."

Clues are scarce, Rybinski said.

"Some neighbors reported that they heard two pops like gunshots, but that's all we have right now," he said. "It's not a whole lot to go on."
