n0Mad Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Honestly, Coney Islands are indeed a distinctly Southeastern Michigan/Detroit phenomenon. My sister would try to talk about hanging out with her friends up here when she was in school in New Orleans, and when she mentioned Coneys, they'd just look at her in confusion, or think she was talking about New York. It was rather funny, actually. Even my friends on the west coast of the state don't know what coneys are. Yeah, even the wikipedia article on coney dogs says that even Coney Island, New York hasn't really heard of them. The way we know coney dogs, drizzled with chili and cheese, that's pretty much a southeast Michigan invention. The only reason they're named after Coney Island is 'cuz that's where the American hot dog was born.
