Live Nukes Transported Across Us

Surely the late Stanley Kubrick is somewhere smiling at this one. Forbes.com has a story about a B-52 Bomber that mistakenly flew 6-nuclear tipped cruise missles across several states last week. The 3-hour flight took the plane from Minot Air Force Base, N.D, to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., on Aug. 30. The incident was so serious that President Bush and Defense Secretary Robert Gates were quickly informed and Gates has asked for daily briefings on the Air Force probe, said Defense Department press secretary Geoff Morrell.

Wow, everything is a joke to you people.

Another "you people" reference... I truelly feel that I am at work...

As far as the joke... we can either laugh or cry I suppose

"you people" as in the other people in the conversation that are not me. It's a common English language expression when talking about other people than yourself.

Let me rephrase it in a way that you can't somehow find offense in.

Phee, in my opinion, you and a few others somehow find humor in subjects that the average person find to be horrifying. The observation of this trait both shocks and dismays me. To me, there are some things that should never be joked about. One being nuclear warheads being flown over our country despite military safety guidelines, US law and International treaties.

Or, we could act logically, have a real discussion about the problems that lead up to the event, discuss what we feel should be done to prevent said event from happening again and when we as a collective people have come to a consensus, implement the agreed to changes.

So... when IS it OK to fly with nukes?

So... when IS it OK to fly with nukes?

Good question

Posted

Officially? Only at Defcon 5 when missles have already been launched by someone else.

As far as I am concerned, NEVER.

As far as I am concerned, NEVER.

I can agree with that.

I believe that if we lived in a system that allowed these things it would be a good idea. But currently we live in an Oligarcy...

I think you meant oligarchy. If so, we will have to agree to disagree. If not, I don't know what your talking about.

Actually, flying nuclear weapons should make you happy, it could be worse, they could transport them by truck. To be quite honest, if they absolutely had to transport these nukes, I'm glad they did it by plane. It's amost impossible to attack to gain control of nukes when they're being flown as opposed to truckin them. The pilots and crew are military members that know eachother well, so some new terrorist can't sneak in as part of the crew or whatever. In these flights, there's no passengers, you either are doing a job, with a well known crew, or you're not up there flying.

Still though, I do wanna bring up the question that what really was the practical purpose of moving them to begin with?

IMO, no other reason than war.

Actually, they are normally transported by truck or train as per international treaty's signed during the Cold War era.

As to why they were being moved... they were not supposed to be being moved. They were supposed to have been removed from the missiles they were on and put in storage. The missiles were being transported to a disposal facility to be decommissioned and destroyed as part of one of the various disarmament treaty's we have signed. The advanced cruise missles they were on were designed for nukes and can't be used for converntional warheads. So, they have to be destroyed.

as a citizen of the USA, you are one of "you people"

Wow, everything is a joke to you people.

Yes.

You said yourself that the members responsible were fired. Others around that saw this will be more careful next time. So many things COULD have happened, but DIDN'T, it's frightening, totally completely fucking scary. There are only a few ways that people can react, that is to laugh, to cry, or to cower in their house, concrete wall themselves inside and never come out. I prefer to try to see the humor in it because I'd rather not go insane.

If you can handle it without seeing humor in it, then far be it for me to criticize you about it. Stop fucking criticizing us. We all realize the lack of appropriateness of it, but fuck, it's not appropriate for our government to fly live nukes over our heads, either. Barely anything that has transpired in the past few years has been appropriate. The only way that some of us can stand up against the hardship is to laugh. But something has to be done, and hate to tell you we are the people that have to do it. We are the ones our children look up to, if we can't stand in our own unique way, Goddess fucking help us all.

The point I am making here is that everybody has a different way of coping with life, we are all adults, it is not kind to criticize us.

*stepping off of her soapbox and back into the shadows*

I was not criticizing anyone. I was expressing my shock at the apparent trivializing of something I found to be of extreme import.

Posted

I'm just one citizen, what can I do about this?

I'm not the pilot of the plane flying the nukes,

nor am I the driver of the truck transporting them,

if they decided to go that route.

I'm sorry if I offended someone by reacting to this topic with humor.

However, I feel that life would be unbearable without humor, even if its untactful at times.

NG,or Nova had a special about nuclear waste, being transported across states in unmarked trucks, let alone that stuff is also some nasty shit that can kill a lot also.hers a video of past tests

Dude, no really.. I wasn't offended.. just shocked that it was turned to humor. Never dawned on me that it was a way of dealing with something out of your control. That, I can understand... God how I wish people would stop assuming I am being an ass when I am not.

sorry, but honestly, that's the way you came across this time - that was my first impression. if you don't want people to assume, you should make an extra effort to make sure the point you're making is *crystal* clear.

that being said, i wasn't too impressed when i read this - i know i'm going to die someday, and it makes no difference to me whether it's from a wayward nuclear bomb, or a homicidal mainiac, or a bad batch of spinach... what am i gonna do - freak out at everything? i don't think so...

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
