DJDeadbeat Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 I personally think of Einsturzende Neubauten Test Dept Chrome and... AFI, LOL. Cuz dey yooz 00ntz in one songz.
phee Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Good topic... Einsturzende Neubauten Skinny Puppy Frontline Assembly Front 242 Those were the first ones that popped into my head.
DJDeadbeat Posted September 13, 2007 Author Posted September 13, 2007 I thought that unlike goth, you can't really fuck up industrial. Industrial doesn't get many "they're not industrial!" And besides, this forum in general seems to like INDUSTRIAL more than goth anyways. *shrug*.
n0Mad Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 My old factory job. And then I think, "How can they name music after this suckage?"
Scales Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 The abandoned factory skate-parks in Tony Hawk video games.
Fierce Critter Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I actually don't care for industrial for the most part. What I do like in industrial tends to be the more melodic, bordering on (if not flat-out) synthpop. NIN, some KMFDM, and that's pretty much it. But the first band name that comes up in my mind would be Skinny Puppy. I don't listen to them or like them, but I know what industrial is.
know_buddy_kares Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 i think of factories and assembly lines and polluting smoke stacks.... lmao
Sybil Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 hahaha... my job? (my boyfriend Paul is welding in the background still...) As far as music, I think of many.. E Neubauten Front 242 Randolph's Grin Battery ..to name a few.
Brother_Hood Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I think of doc martens and moshing.... Ministry Revolting Cocks Older NIN Biggod 20 Foetus
nilhil_glory Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 front 242 throbbing gristle i always thought gravity kills of as an industrial act front line assembley newer sigue sigue sputnik ceisium 137 stuff like that to stuff like amduscia hocico punto omega
Scary Guy Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 But Skinny Puppy is EBM. As well as Front 242, early Ministry, Front Line Assembly Those are SOOO not Industrial because they weren't on the industrial records label. Industrial is: Chris Carter Clock DVA The Leather Nun Throbbing Gristle ... </elitest rivithead mode> See easier just to group similar sounding things together. People fuck up the genres, so it is just easier to redefine them into what people think fits where. goth = depressing darker natured stuff industrial = crunchy electronic beats with some unrecognizable lyrics you can't make out techno = repetitive beats with little to no lyrics (also repeating) rock/metal = guitars, drums, and a bass country/folk = violin, piano, + the stuff listed in rock/metal (rock/metal being optional (Rockabilly) Combining these we get the subgenres techno industrial = NIN, skinny puppy, Nitzer Ebb industrial metal = KMFDM, Ministry, Manson gothic techno industrial = VNV, APOP, Covenant (keep in mind this is actually modern EBM) gothic folk = Current 93, The Crüxshadows, Faith and the Muse gothic rock = Type O Negative, The Mission U.K., Sisters, Cult, Gothabilly = I won't even list anything because I know I'll just end up getting yelled at by Joey That's just the way my brain works in categorizing things. Similar bands get grouped together. I can't have 10 different subsections in my DJ case so I stopped caring. Not that everyone doesn't confuse goth and industrial already anyway. Really I should have three genres, good music, music I can tolerate, shitty music Maybe the next thread can be entitled "when you hear good music, what do you think of?" though I'm sure something like that already exists in this forum.
phee Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Really I should have three genres, good music, music I can tolerate, shitty music Indeed
Necromanta Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Type O Negative is not goth rock. FYI. :D More like gothic metal. Though if we're talking about gothic metal; Tristania is another decent example of gothic metal. Just for reference. Relating to the topic though.. Arzt+Pfusch(I really don't consider them EBM) Einstürzende Neubauten Throbbing Gristle My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult NON Clock DVA Fad Gadget Foetus Mono No Aware

Very true, I'll add Beseech, Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, and Shape of Despair (seriously, if you want music that makes you want to kill yourself, that last band I listed is AWESOME) to that list. Then again like I said I lump them together. My goth metal section in my case is nowhere near the size of my gothic rock section.
phee Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I would agree that Skinny Puppy and Front 242 are what I concider "True EBM?" but usually they pop into mind when hearing the term...

phee Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 The sound of 3 Belgians having a fight with a washing machine. One of your family reunions?
Fierce Critter Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Most skinny puppy I've heard is cacaphonous, non-melodic, and noisy. Most EBM I like is melodic, rhythmic, and danceable. I really don't see how in the world Skinny Puppy is EBM. Not that my life depends on some kind of resolution to all this. Mostly, this kind of discussion makes my head explode.
phee Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Skinny Puppy is actually one of the more musically complex and textured bands out there... there is so much going on that it is like hearing a different song every time... BUT... I can see how a vocalist might not like them, almost all of the complexity/layering/sound design/texture/melodies/harmonies are not in the vocals... the vocals (which I love) are more beastial and spoken... I would probably like more of the modern oontz ebm if they had half the layering that Skinny Puppy or Frontline Assembly for that matter puts into their sound.... it just seems to take so much more effort...
phee Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 As far as the EBM definition.... Front 242 called their music it in 1981... Bands like Skinny Puppy, FLA, Haujobb, etc... were said to fit the definition... then somewhere in the mid ninties, the definition changed

Fully agreed, musically complex would be an understatement. You also have to take into consideration that not only are they pretty much the longest running industrial band in the world but that they've been able to fully reinvent themselves almost every time they release an album. They've gone from being creepy to eerie, sad to upbeat, dancy to calm, and everything inbetween and almost none of their material sounds exacly alike. Hardly any other bands in the scene could ever claim that sort of fame, they've been around upwards of 30 years and still going strong. I mean every time I hear new Skinny Puppy it damn near makes me shit myself and is never like anything I've heard before. And Ogre's voice....? OMFG...don't get me started. There's gotta be this massive pit of darkness all up inside that guy or something, I mean you don't just hear his vocals, they fucking hit your ear drums which leaves you fully violated, disturbed and loving it. Also they have the uncanny ability of taking the noises of life and arranging them in a way that echoes through your ears and sends chills up in your soul. Not even necessarily music notes but rather audio snippets and odd clanks that keep you on your guard and guessing, however they always come across as sharp, intriguing and almost never out of place. Their more soothing songs are ridiculously well written 9 times outta 10, the background harmony is usually really smooth and sweet yet still able to keep its creepyness. SO....Skinny Puppy wins. For forever. Hands down. No contest. If you were to represent this mathematically it would be something like: Ogre + Key = Godlike END OF DISCUSSION.
Head Wreck Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 oh yay, a simple what do you think has turned into another dressing down by the music elitists. fun for all the family.
Scary Guy Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Right, I call Skinny Puppy "Classic EBM" since no one seems to remember that THAT is what EBM actually is. The new stuff I either just say EBM or "NuEBM" or "NeoEBM". Kind of like NuMetal, but sucks much less.
