Marc's Garage Is Now Open For Business

I've put off a number of maintenance items on my car because of being in the midst of moving, figuring once I was settled in I could get to them. Stuff like oil change, new wipers, rotating tires, etc. The most critical item on the list was brakes. I knew the front pads were just about done with. I was HOPING they would last until this coming weekend so I wouldn't have to change them on a weeknight. No dice. *Sigh* The occasional scraping noises I had been hearing over the past week turned into a full on barrage of grinding today. Soooo... I went to the store and got the parts. Things went smoothly, the brakes are done, tires rotated and wiper fluid changed, which leaves new wipers and the oil change for the weekend.

So... Now that I'm back and I have a garage, I'm open to helping anyone out with car repair/maintenance issues, assuming we can work it out schedule-wise. ( I am pretty busy so don't expect instant service.. ) A contribution/payment of some sort will generally be required but I can guarantee it will be far less then anyone else. Beer will suffice for the easy stuff. A little cash if it's more complicated. If you want to learn so you don't have to come back, I'm more then willing to teach. I'm always open to bartering. (I need photo props - Clothes, cool furniture, etc)

Mods... If you think this needs to be moved or split... go for it.

What would you charge to either adjust or change the serpentine belt on a 95 dodge caravan?

We bought this a couple months ago. Came with a niiiiiiiiiice belt squeak. Putting belt dressing on it doesn't last more than a day or so. Not sure if the belt is old and dry, or if the tensioner isn't set right, or what.

It's a side-mount engine and Jon is loathe to mess with it. We can buy the belt if you think it needs replacing.

Hmmm... It's just a belt for the accessories, right? Describe the squeak. Is it a squeak or a squeal?

When it's in full-force, it's a SCREECH.

Dunno about the former - it's the one on the side that coils around about 6-8 wheels.

Assuming nothings completely buried (As they sometimes are on vans) $20. If it gets difficult, I might request an additional six pack of beer. Don't worry, there's a party store within walking distance. :p

EDIT. Plan on replacing it, there's no sense messing about with stuff that's most likely in need of replacement anyways.

I'll follow-up with you beginning of next month probably. :)

How big is this "garage" and is it heated?

If I can fit it in just leave the key under the mat, I'll find my way around just fine :D

Also do you have a mig / tig / know how to weld?

I have a 2001 Kia Rio (shaddup)

its recently started making noise when moving...sounds sort of like tire noise but my tires all look good - although I do have a bit fo a pull to the right....any ideas?

maybe possible wheel bearing shot, or cv joint shot. Depends on what the sound is. If its squealing, it could be the bearing, but if its clicking it could be the cv joint. Marc will have to get it in and have a look see. Since the issue is taking place on the front end of the car, it should be addressed asap since the front end is the end that steering is on..

Wheel bearings don't make much noise when they're going bad except in turns. You can usually tell which one because they get noisy when loaded. (Outside corner) Something that sounds like tire noise plus pulling? It might just need an alignment. Have you rotated your tires? If you leave them in one place too long they'll start to wear a particular way and can sometimes get noisy. Tough to tell without hearing/driving it.

The Hearse won't fit. :p

I can weld a little, though I haven't in a few years. I WISH I had a MIG to play with.

At this point I'm going to need to rent out a hanger bay at the airport.

I hear that too. But the mechanic takes care of everything I do with it now. Too much of a hassle to find a place where it can be done since a lot of these apartment complexes don't let you do any repair or oil changes.

Btw Marc, I need my balls joints done up :p

Seriously. If you know how to weld, Jeff has muffler "issues."

Muffler, or somewhere else in the exhaust system? If it's just the muffler, we can cut it off and use clamps to put a new one on.

Once again.. I can weld a little, but I have NO welder.

I remember reading that tauras model came with a suzuki engine. I bet a good tune up, oil change, and perhaps a new fuel filter, would probably revive it quite a bit...

You just want to do interesting things in the garage, make interesting use of the lift and such.....hehehehehehehe.

I might be needing some help with body work. Replace a left front fender on a 95 Lumina, left front fender, hood, headlight assembly and bumper on a 89 caddy.

Replacing things is no problem. I refuse to do anyone elses dents or bondo work, though.

As for Suzie... You should have seen my response to her via PM.

Not sure I could handle your response :wink

As far as dents or bondo, I would be doing it too, wouldn't just drop it into someone elses lap.
