machine Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/14213670/detail.html I was expecting some blame in this article on Republicans.. since this IS wdiv... but to my surprise, they story is pretty much explaining how Granholm is stalling here and is pushing for this shutdown. Tremendous.
Msterbeau Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 This is a legislative matter. I don't see the Republicans helping one bit. They refuse to consider raising taxes in compromise with cuts in some programs. Until the employment situation in the state gets better, there's not much alternative unless we want cuts in education and other programs that are absolutely critical. And how do you get her pushing for the shutdown out of the article. Holding the legislature to their jobs is wrong, how? They've had a long time to figure this out and both the Democratic and Republicans in the legislature are to blame, not the governer.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 What about the Democrat controlled house? They won't pass tax increases either. Granholm is the one with the power to order a shutdown. Which she has already started doing. I'm still shocked she ever got re-relected. You know, the people in Michigan pay 10.10% state and local taxes per year. Thats spot on the National average. Yet, Michigan's government is out of money, has the countrys highest unemployment rate and somehow... the person in charge... who gets the final say on everything... is not somehow at fault. Even when she threatens a shutdown, refuses to accept a budget extention of any duration and is still spending millions of dollars to repaint the downtown areas in a vane attempt to draw in new businesses that wont come because she wont give any tax breaks like other states do.... yeah.... fuck Granholm with a 50 grit sand paper dildo.
know_buddy_kares Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Well simply put in this article, taxes are cut, but the spending isn't. This article shows we're 1.75 billion in the hole here... I'm still looking up how this has even happened because something like this just doesn't happen overnight... it just might possibly have something to do with events while Engler was in office but I'm not pointing any fingers yet here. But the fact of the matter is, Michigan is stuck between a rock and a hard place, and as much as people would love to blame Granholm, she can't be the direct cause of all this. It's simply stubbornness on all sides that are failing to reach an agreement to RESPONSIBLY handle this. I think fingers need to stop being pointed, fuck who's to blame really, let's instead worry about fixing this because this is our jobs and our lives being effected by this. Pointing the blame doesn't solve a damn thing.
know_buddy_kares Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 a good point from Machine's article that I'd like to quote for truth is, "Granholm said Thursday night that she wouldn't support a temporary extension unless a budget deal includes higher taxes to support public safety, education and health care, a stance most Democratic lawmakers back. Granholm says a budget extension would cost the state $125 million each month, forcing the state deeper into debt." Thats exactly what would happen too. We'd be fucked in the long run for a quick fix like that, it's irresponsible.
n0Mad Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I'm still chuckling about yesterday's newspapers. The headlines for one section are all about the government shutdown which includes liquor sales and casino operations. The headlines for another section are all about the grand opening of MGM Grand Detroit casino. Talk about bad timing! "Well, our hotel and gift shop are opened, but you can't gamble or drink any cocktails." lol
CatsEyeOfTheWiccan Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Well, if the goverment shutdown..I will have now FIA assentce..and CNS people...I guess. This sucks majorly, our state has seen the worest I ever seen it all my life. -CatsEye

Looking at the south-east area of the US. This state is going nowhere fast and is absolutely the worst place to raise a child. Any other future parents are probably thinking of the same idea right about now.

I be married and have family..soon in my life like in the next 4 years. I got a job that makes $20/hr. at a Recording Studio. But, my bussines is slow because people don't want go on tour like they used to it cost to much in gas. So, who knows the future of Michigan..I love Michigan still despete our landslide economy and weird goverment shutdown stuff. I love michigan since we got nature in alot majorty of our state and the lakes and rivers..here in Michigan that keeps me always a Michigangander. -CatsEye
Slept with ghost Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 This is just a way for each party to make the other look bad and the people are the ones who end up paying. I say take away their paychecks and the problem will be solved.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 I would agree with that except it's not a party vs party fight. The house refuses to raise taxes and it's controlled by Democrats. The senate refuses to raise taxes and it's run by the republicans. Granholm wont accept any budget, no matter how balanced it is unless it includes a raise 1.2% raise in state income tax. That raise would make Michigan, one of the worst off states economically, the state with the highest level of state taxes. Thats real incentive for new businesses to bring jobs in. (heavy sarcasm)

(heavy sarcasm) True, but she's trying to get money that needs to be spent to keep things relatively smooth running is the gist i've been getting from all the articles I've been reading. Personally, I don't know if there is a magical fix all answer people are looking for. I WOULD SAY, that tax the rich an equal ratio to what the middle class is being taxed... but that's just me. It really all boils down to spending only what you got. Granholm doesn't impress me, let me make that clear... however for you to ask how she got re elected, you only need look at who she ran against. Devos.. sorry, I'd rather have Granholm than that slime ball.

freydis Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 This state might as well break apart and sink into the lakes..... we'll probably see an upswing in crime (if we havent already) and more rats leaving the sinking ship......
Hellion Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Give it time this state will be 100% no population since they like to fuck everyone over,no businesses want to deal with that, hey they might as well use this state as a mega landfill.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 um... the top 50% of average incomes... pay 96.03% of federal income tax. wait wait... thats just federal taxes... lets add in state taxes... the top 1% still pay 36% of all tax. I dont buy the crap that the rich don't pay thier share of taxes. the numbers dont support it at all. but hey... lets make everyone happy... Lets all pay the on average 20% rate that rich people pay compared to the 25% we pay for federal and 10% for state and another 5% for property tax... no adjustments, no right offs, no earned income credit or child care credit. Just a flat 20% federal, 10% state and 5% for property. That still leaves you some money to pay sales tax. Hey, thats a 5% tax break for us.
Destroit Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Great...now we have service tax. To my sentiments on the subject please read my topic I think called "We're all going to be struggling way worse" I don't remember who said it (up above) but we shouldn't place blame? Uhmmm if your fucking kid took your fucking credit card and went out on a shopping spree, blowing your life savings on STUPID bullshit that you don't need and then you had to pay for it...I'm sorry, not only would you be pissed, but that kid would definately be in some serious fucking trouble (i.e. blame). So YES we SHOULD be pointing the finger because it's her fucking fault. If she couldn't responsibly fill the governor's shoes well then....SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE. Probably her last ditch attempt to be famous and get attention in the limelight...since she wanted to be an actress originally and failed at that too, and since she obviously can't deal with numbers, she probably had no idea what the hell she was getting herself into. Also...I don't remember who said it above but it was something about having to raise taxes so things can be run smoothly? Uhmmm WELL had she not blown all of our reserves on bullshit...then we wouldn't be in this predicament now would we? As I said in my other post...3.2 unemployment rate when Engler was in office (lowest Michigan ever had). 7 point something now? Let's just say actions (in this case her horrible actions) speak much louder than her LIES. I really doubt that something mysterious happened in that lapse of time that made our money disappear unless the GOVERNMENT SPENT IT. Or it was stolen by Treasury Gnomes...you just can't trust those little money grubbing mythical gnome creatures now adays (obligatory eye-roll).
CatsEyeOfTheWiccan Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 I had idea, if they shut down..then we all shouldn't be foreced to pay sales tax and get price break on the state income tax this year. -CatsEye
