New Job For Jon Possibly/probably

So, Jon's been working for DDH, a door company in the area since 2005. DDH doesn't pay worth a shit, has trouble keeping their techs busy 40 hours a week, just laid off 16 people, and loses employees like water from a holey bukkit.

And so Jon applied for a job with a competing company, GLA.

GLA has hired in a lot of DDH cast-offs. And DDH got pissed off and started threatening to sue if GLA "courted away" any more DDH employees.

So GLA has been too scared to hire Jon in.

But then, he hears from Jeff, who used to work for DDH and is now working for GLA. Jeff tells him that yet another door company, BES, is calling him and trying to get him to go work there. Jeff says no thanks, but I know this guy named Jon who works for DDH who would be a great employee.

So, after a couple weeks of phone calls with Jim at BES, Jon is supposed to meet with Jim today. Jim has Jon come into the BES headquarters for an interview. Jon called in sick yesterday, and today for this, just prolongs the "I'm sick and going to the doctor" charade.

But...

Jon's current supervisor at DDH, Eric, is a former BES employee. And last week, Jon made the mistake of telling Eric that he was looking at applying for a job at BES. And then Jon finds out that Eric "visited" BES the day after Jon told him this. Jim at BES hates Eric. So Eric was there to see other former fellow employees.

And apparently, to tell them to spy on Jim. Because while Jon is in Jim's office being interviewed, Eric calls him. And claims that Jon's phone rang him and he hears what sounds like Jim interviewing Jon. And all this time, that phone had been sitting in front of both Jon and Jim, and was not calling out. So it's not a matter of Jon maybe accidentally hitting the call button to dial up Eric and Eric hearing the interview.

Jon blows him off and says, "I'm at the doctor's office. Gotta go."

Eric calls back and tells Jon, "You better ask him to give you a shot in the ass, 'cause it's gonna hurt a lot less than what's coming."

All this while Jon is sitting in front of Jim.

So, basically, Eric had someone at BES call him to say a DDH employee is meeting with Jim. Rat bastard.

So, Now I'm waiting for a call back from Jon. He finished the interview, and Jim told him that a guy from personnel is going to call him tonight to discuss details. Basically, he's got the job, so long as Jon likes the terms (meaning $$).

I was talking to Jon a little while ago, and he was telling me all this. And he gets another call, so he tells me he'll call back. And he hasn't yet. So I'm sitting here wondering if he's getting bitched out by someone higher up than Eric at DDH, and is he going to be fired before he actually lands the job 100% at BES.

Gads, I'm fucking nervous right now. I'm almost shaking.

Well, EricTheRatBastard sure 'nuff put enough fear in Jon to get him to start reconsidering.

But a nice dinner, some reassurances from a somewhat more optimistic realist (me), pointing out everything we know about Eric and DDH (pretty much all bad) and what we know about this potential job (A lot of ??'s, and some definites that are VERY good) has calmed his nerves.

Just waiting on a call tonight from another BES employee to hash out final details and for Jon to say "I'd be happy to work for you." The resignation letter is already written, folded and addressed, ready to be handed in tomorrow.

God, this would be such an incredible benefit to us. The money will be massively better, the benefits are choice, he will be union after 90 days (good for someone like him), he will be eligible for journeyman status in a couple years or so at somewhere's around $31 an hour should things work out. The training/experience will be priceless. An increase in status/job title for a guy who is a GED drop-out with NO formal training in ANYTHING who was making $5.45 an hour 9 years ago when we got married and will be making about quadruple that - with no higher education.

Even if the money wasn't there, I'd want him to take this. Even if we were having problems and looking at divorcing, I'd want him to take this. I can't really put into words how important it is for him to succeed and keep progressing. For his peace of mind, self-esteem, confidence.

Fingers crossed, prayers said. I'll post a new thread if things come through.

Gah! What a mess. Stupid office politics. I hope Jon gets the job and all goes well Camille!!

Even if he doesn't get this he should continue looking for something else very aggressively. That company he is working for doesn't care much for the safety of their employees from what you've said, and it's a no-brainer if the money isn't even there.

I'm sorta-kinda dealing with a similar situation. It's hard to leave a steady job, but I've learned that changing jobs is usually a step up.

It sounds like a fantastic opportunity.

Fingers crossed!

I'll never understand why companies that treat their employees like crap act surprised and get upset about a high turnover rate.

I know times are tough and $$ is tite.

in four years Ive walked away from two three jobs here in MI. Its scary. But Jon should nto work for a place that does nto treat him right, bottom line. Jon should just tell his current Boss "If you dont liek what I'm doing, pay me a higher wage and give me more hours, I have bills to pay"

nobody's Boss is God. and calling Jon and threatenign him that way is illegal. I'd rip a hole in anybody's ass that pulled that sort of shit on me, im a grown man (and my boss knows this because he tried and I exploded on him in front of his wife and my co-worklers for talkign down to me - he has noever done it since).

to Jon: FUCK THEM. WHEN A DOOR OPENS - WALK THRU!!!

The best time to find a new job is while you still have your current job.

Even with more money, nobody should have to work under those conditions. Sending him out alone in a high crime area where he got beaten up and robbed, then another incident where all his tools were stolen?

Even though they replaced the tools, to hell with that! He could easily have been killed (and still could be). They shouldn't be sending workers out alone under those conditions. Not sure if even 2 would be safe in those neighborhoods.

Pins and needles time.

A couple different "higher ups" at DDH talked to Jon privately yesterday, leet it be known that they knew he was looking around, and mentioned giving him more money to stay. No set figures.

And his supeervisor is trying to kiss his ass by saying they'll reset the territories and give Jon an area that is not Detroit.

I have to leave Jon alone on this. It's up to him. I know what I would do, but I can't make that decision for him. I did print out this thread and all its responses for him to read. But I'm just going to wait and see.

I just hope he at least carries this through to completion. That way he'll know what he's worth to another company, not just to DDH. Even if he stays at DDH, I hope he goes all the way through to an offer.

My stomach hurts.

Another territory and more $ - sounds like they really really want to keep him as an employee!

Whatever happens it looks like something good is going to come out of this. :)
